DESIGN NAME: Palo Audio
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Speaker
INSPIRATION: Combining technology and natural resources always fascinated me beyond its elegance. It has a deeper meaning. A friend lost his house in a wildfire and I witnessed the aftermath. Structures collapsed and all trees burned. However, fallen trunks had unique shapes and characteristics. Making sound come out of these pieces was like a scream towards our actions against nature. The working prototype, backed by sound engineers and woodworkers, received positive feedback from experienced designers.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Palo Audio is an interactive speaker providing users with cutting–edge sound and authentic, natural design. Each piece's unique characteristics attract one to appreciate viewing the object as much as its sound. It also serves as a tool to remind us about the consequences of our carbon footprint.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction with the piece uses bluetooth to pair the speaker with you phone, where you will have total access to the range specified by the speaker. The highlight is the change in how people listen to music. Palo incorporates visual appeal to bring listeners together to appreciate and analyze intricacies of wooden piece. A story of each wooden piece will be provided upon purchase (online).
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2019 and the marketing phase began in September 2019 with small exhibition to accredited designers in Los Angeles.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The prototype was created using minimal cost. The wooden piece was found on Ojai wildfires, with the speaker being removed and installed from an existing stereo.
Due to the old technology of the stereo, a wooden base had to be created for the piece to sit on, mounted with palettes. The ideal base will be recreated from lamp bases in chrome, brass and iron supported by a marble block.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Product will work via bluetooth, with detachable charging port.
dimensions:508 x 609 x 850 mm
Packaging will use conventional shipping boxes and paper fringes

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research began to understand the fault of society in wildfires. The objective was to grasp people’s impact on wildfires by researching historical fires' origin and spread location, and its consequence on the economy and resources. Data was collected empirically by visiting fires in Ojai Valley and Malibu and from articles and studies. The conclusion was 90% of wildfires are caused by people, from unattended campfires to cigarette butts and intentional arson, costing the US $5.1BI in 10 years.
CHALLENGE: The toughest part about the prototype was to appropriately embed the speaker on the wooden piece so that the sounds came out with quality. The size of the 1997 speaker used proved to be a big obstacle, which set the tone for housing the system and wires. Dealing with minimal viable products, research on equipment had to be focused on repurposing pieces.
