DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Meanwhile

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Moodlamp

INSPIRATION:
The ‘Meanwhile’ is a spur from the ‘Monday’-lamp. It is the logical next step. The designer wanted to continue working with plywood and challenge it on strength and esthetics.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Moodlamp 'Meanwhile'; is a freestanding two-headed atmosphere creator. This object is completely made of plywood that is glued under high pressure. The custom-made varnish gives it the matt finish while protecting the wood from UV-light.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Different kind off bulbs or lamps can be used as long as the fit the E27 socket. But as the lamp is intended to be a mood creator, it is sold with 2 LED bulbs with a warm glow and a mirror top to prevent shining in the eyes.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The basic idea came up on May 2018. Several prototypes where made in the headquarters in Ronse (Belgium) to get every detail just wright. Eventually, the object was shown to the public in October 2018.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Basically, the materials are used in an unconventional way for this lamp. The armature is made of plywood that is cut circular and connected with the flat sides together. Plywood is not intended for this implementation, with makes it attractive. The same thing happens with the foot and the support. Bars of plywood are cut under a certain angle to get the esthetics well and then glued together. Then the X-shape is carved from this block.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 70 cm x Depth 25 cm x Height 120 cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Different plywood gives a different grain. Same for the angle in which the plate is cut. So the designer had to check both for the best esthetic result. The strips that are used for the foot are cut under an angle of 15 degrees. As wood intends to change color because of UV-light, Dasein Products had to find the best finishing layers. They concluded for 2 layers in a strong, matt varnish and close with an extra top layer from a different brand.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part during the design is probably the electricity cable which is always in the way. The lamp is an object with a lot of handicraft. The cylinder has to be sandpapered and varnished while the cable has to be long enough to hide it in the support later on.
