DESIGN NAME: Uki Bedside Lamp
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bedside sleep cycle ambient lamp
INSPIRATION: Mobile phones are not a novelty but rather a mainstay in our life and culture. Productivity, convenience and the abundance of capabilities a phone possess allow us to connect with anyone, and live in a much more interconnected world than ever before. Thus, Uki, a bedside lamp that promotes healthy bedtime habit was born out of this unhealthy obsession we have with our smart devices .
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Uki, a bedside lamp strives to help the user rest, detach and break away from such compulsions. There are no turn-on or off buttons and the way to turn off the lights from it is to place your mobile phone on it. With the QI-wireless platform assembled inside, the top platform which holds the phone starts sinking down slowly - resembling the transient movement of our eyelids closing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The user would manually switch on Uki. Uki would act as an ambient bedside lamp. When the user is about to turn in to sleep, they would put their phone on it. Once the phone is placed, the circuit inside would be activated and the top platform would be lowered. The lowering cycle would last approximately 20 minutes. When the phone is removed, Uki would return to its normal default position within 5 minutes. To turn on the lamp again, the user would have to turn it on using the manual switch.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Uki was conceptualized within 3 months, from January 2019 to March 2019, in Singapore City.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The concept for Uki was born out of the curiosity about the relationship we as people have with the technological objects around us. We researched the impact of technological objects on our daily lives and decided to focus on the impact of mobile phones, specifically. Various studies on the effects of phone usage before sleeping has been shown to negatively impact sleep quality, hence we decided to design Uki as one solution to this issue, as well as to highlight the often unnoticed relationship between people and objects; in this case, users and their phones. Through the usage of Uki, we hope to help users foster healthier sleeping habits with the reduction of phone usage at night, while helping them better understand the relationship (and possible reliance) they have with their phones.
CHALLENGE: Identifying a core issue was our first challenge during this project as we wanted to design a product that highlights the relationship between people and objects - we needed to identify the exact issue we wanted to rectify through our product, and eventually decided on sleep quality and disruption due to mobile phone usage. After this, the challenges we faced were in trying to ensure that our solution is viable and the user experience of our product is a pleasant one that brings more aid than hindrance.
