DESIGN NAME: Retro Narrative Elegance
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: This was a renovation project of a 20-year-old home. As the client preferred the existing classic staircase handrail, along with the female client especially preferring American styles, the design team merged both design elements and transformed them into a Neolassical American style, adhering to the taste of the clients.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It was designed to keep existing advantages, and given a better new layout to boost user experience. . Incorporating the porch and the patio into the interior within building regulations eminently enlarged space use. It created ease of movement and circulation to this project.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The new design altered the direction of the basement entrance and brought the courtyard to the interior to add another staircase. Through the reconfigurations, the media room and the car park are now separated. In addition, this change also opened up the original public zone on the first floor.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was finished in May, 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: It was a three story house with a basement. Around 500m2 was in the design plan. The basement includes a separated media room and a car park. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The outdated design could not meet the client needs nor utilize the excellent natural lighting the site enjoys. On the whole, the new design retained objects in good condition and did minimal construction and paint jobs, and adjusted the layout to improve function and movement. Materials were selected for ease of maintenance considering humidity. Pure white American muntin boards made up the main visual theme and are complemented by the hardwood handrails earth tone and wood grain to achieve a homey and cozy atmosphere.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part in this project was the arrangement and construction of the media room in the basement. To avoid car pollutions, in new design floor plan, there were staircases for media room and car parking separately. Yet this change required sharp calculation and evaluation, complying building regulations and confirming the structure safety.
