DESIGN NAME: Tridiva
PRIMARY FUNCTION: A Wabi Sabi Home
INSPIRATION: The design brief called for a perfect getaway home on a hilly terrain, far away from the city, where one could disconnect from the clutter of today’s world and connect with one’s own inner being.
The site was selected for the scenic view from each location. Hence a direct road leading to the site was avoided, and natural hill slope was used as a path leading to the house.
As the world goes onto building complex concrete jungles, the house stands out in ‘Gratitude to Nature’.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is conceptualized as a collaborative approach between an architect, client and local contractors. It also explores the possibility of recycling and up-scaling of building components. Despite a very innovative design quality, its simplicity & ease of accepting local materials & craftsmanship is its biggest design strength. The remote location and low budget (18 euros / sq ft - shell + interiors) were the primary driving forces for selecting this design philosophy.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the house was to be used during family visits with friends, the living area was made large to accommodate more people. Enough outdoor spaces like the cozy sit out space on the terrace, fireplace in the backyard & a veranda in the front was created. Also, some outdoor spaces are made in such a way that group yoga activities can be carried out. As there are wild animals like leopards in the area, a barbed wire fence is created. Existing stone trail path is used access to the house.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 in the Garhwal Himalayas, Northern India and completed in October 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After careful study it was decided to construct RCC foundation for the main structure, due to high earthquake prone zone. Insulated metal sheets along with steel frames are used for the sloping roof in response to climatic conditions. Local stone is used for walls & retaining walls. Kota stone is used for flooring. The furniture and some building components like doors and windows were bought from old furniture markets & are used after modification and polishing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site being a steep contoured one, the building had to be planned in whatever flat land that was available with minimum cutting / filling and construction of retaining walls. RCC structure is used as the main strategy to counter earthquake forces. Sloping roof of insulated metal sheets helps during monsoon & snowfall. The dimension of the building is 95 x 30 feet Large (18 feet wide x 5 feet high) wooden recycle windows are also used.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The contours of the site along with the soil conditions were studied to obtain maximum results with minimum cutting / filling etc. The natural vegetation & movement of birds / animals inhabitants of that location were studied during site visits. The suitability of material was evaluated by studying surrounding construction which used local materials. The maximum day & night temperature and its effects were also evaluated.
CHALLENGE: With a built–up area of 2,500sq.ft, the site is situated at a topographic zone bringing major challenge in execution and transportation of materials. Due to its remote location at a height, the materials had to be carried manually by local workers or on mules up to the site. This has also led to no technical support available on site. The total cost of construction and furnishings was below 50,000 euros.
