PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: Inspired by natural wood and its unique calming and relaxing qualities, this project was bespokely designed for this retired couple who would like to have a contemporary yet traditional, aesthetically modern and yet welcoming home.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Most of the retired couple would spend their lifetime savings on their retired home, so not only does this place have to be extremely comfortable, relaxing and subtly classy, but it also needs to be as sustainable as possible, so this synergy of modern design with everlasting natural materials like the combination of wood and stone was created. Warm woods always give a serene and warm look, while stone always gives a modern chic and luxurious look.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You will find this intimate yet relaxing home situated in Shatin, a highly populated residential area in HK. As convenient as it is, you can come home from the hustle bustle of the city within 5 mins and immediately enjoy this urban sanctuary as soon as you get home.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project was started in July 2017 and was completed in Feb 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To create a sense of calmness, serenity and timelessness, a neutral palette was opted, with a mixture of light and dark beige and browns, highlighted with some whites and bronze metals.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This apartment is 75sq.m.
TAGS: Natural wood, contemporary yet traditional, modern yet classic, serene, calm, relaxing interiors, concealed storage.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To add to the contemporary yet traditional theme, the artwork in the living room was custom made using a fine print of an old water town from a classical Chinese literature book, and have it silkscreened in cyan, and mounted in sleek bronze metal frame with beige linen as background to give it a contemporary yet serene look.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this project was to transform this 3-bedroom apartment to be as open as possible so that the retired couple can enjoy every single inch of the apartment and at the same time, create as many concealed storage as possible so they can store away their lifetime collectibles.
