DESIGN NAME: Soleil 88 Phnom Penh
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Row Houses
INSPIRATION: Row houses form a common scenery in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The row houses stand side by side to one another. The whole complex becomes a mega building, and you can hardly distinguish one from the other.
As Phnom Penh is becoming the upcoming developing cities in the South East Asia, the standard of living for the general citizens elevates too. The young generation becomes more adapted to a new and modern culture. They become more keen on individuality and privacy of city life.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a development with a total of 88 row houses. The original features of a traditional row houses, the balcony, covered roof garden, etc, are kept to accommodate the sub-tropical climate, with an enhancement to fit the modern life. The main window is tilted to avoid overlooking of facing houses. The balcony is recessed to prevent a direct view from the street. It also serves as a divider, forming a buffer zone in-between houses. The anonymous big complex become distinguishable individual house.
Instead of a continuous row of houses, original eight building lots are turned into open space. A garden is then inserted within the development to create a leisure space for the residents and arouse a sense of belonging.
Khmer culture of color building is also handled in a modern way. A golden color, which symbolizes the sun and a favourite of the locals, is subtly applied on the houses to balance Khmer preference as well as preserving a modern feeling. Purple color is applied to 4 storey houses which indicate the grandiose of this house type.
The rooftop garden is a bonus to the house. In addition to its splendid view towards the surrounding, people can rest or have outdoor activities at this exclusive use area.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: There are 2 types of houses: 3 storeys and 4 storeys. When comparing to traditional row houses, there are two improvements: The basic layout is optimized from mezzanine floor design to full floor design to provide rooms with higher headroom and more space. The steps of the staircase are more gentle and thus more user-friendly, especially to family with kids and elderly.
While the 4 bedrooms 3 storey houses are for domestic use, the 4 storey is flexible in becoming a commercial cum residential complex. People can work at the lower 2 floors and live at the upper 2 floors as a dormitory.
