| DESIGN NAME: Physical PRIMARY FUNCTION: Opening Sofa Bed INSPIRATION: The design was made in the spirit of urbanism in the 21st century. The conspicuous features of the urban lifestyle are the high pace, small residential units and a high living cost. Therefore, The living space and the time have become more valuable. The simplicity and lightness are the prominent features in the sofa’s design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The sofa “Physical” has a light urban design, both visual and physical. Using plywood and cushions, enables the light weight. The assembling of the sofa is simple and is suited for self-assembly. The simplicity and lightness are the prominent features in the sofa’s design. They are mostly reflected by the opening and closing of the sofa, which is performed single-handedly in one easy motion, with virtually no effort. Adjustment of the cushions is also not necessary thanks to its design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The opening and closing of the sofa is very intuitive. One continuous motion is needed in either direction. There are no buttons, levers or any additional actions needed. Thanks to its ingenious design, the user starts the movement of the sofa side and gravity takes care of the rest, both helping to complete the transformation and fixating the sofa side in its new orientation. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design is intended for mass production, and uses laser cut plywood, some screws and wooden rods. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 185-225 cm x Depth 80 cm x Height 70 cm TAGS: opening sofa bed, sofa bed, sofa, mechanism, urban furniture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: Simplicity being the prominent feature, the initial and main challenge was to create a system with no mechanism. The built-in manual way the sofa works makes it cheaper to produce and easy to maintain over time.
