DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Home

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential Space / single level

INSPIRATION:
Home. The design remained the strength of the original building and eliminated its weakness by applying wood as the base. The wooden texture was complemented with harmonized color and cabinet with soft touch. The precise design added a dimension of "home" into the space.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Fine-tuning the positions of the walls and openings in the master bedroom not only offered complete storage, but also created an independent dressing room for the host of the house. The original unused space was eliminated, making the public space more complete and aligned. The wall in the entire public space also became continuous and more harmonious, and the kitchen, dining room, reading area, sofa, couch, openings and window views more integrated.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
From being a couple to becoming a family, children are an important part of living and space. Therefore, in the arrangement of space and light flow, full interaction and smoothness were priorities in the configuration. The openings in the kitchen and public areas were in the east-west direction, which was in the line of moving sunlight. Being the center of family food preparation, the kitchen formed the starting point. First, it was placed adjacent to the dining space. Then moving toward the direction of the sunlight was a nook for reading and work. Going along the direction of the opening was the sofa and living room. Continuing from the opening was a deck that extended light into various openings, creating a sense of connected space. Such a spatial arrangement connected the different spaces, allowing the hosts to handle tasks in the reading and working nook, to watch ball games from the sofa, to prepare dinner in the kitchen. Also, it allowed them to play with the children on the window seat, to read to them or simply gaze out of the window. From whatever space they were in, family members could interact with each other at home.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2018 and finished in January 2019 in New Taipei City

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Laminate flooring, steel panel, pattern glass, blackboard paint, blushing wooden veneer

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
108 m2

TAGS:
Colored cabinet, Slanted ceiling, Expanded deck, Matte black worldmap, Tinted wood, Light weight metal

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
In the boundaries between areas, the bookcase in the reading area was made with tinted wood and light weight metal combined with sculptured lines to define the space without compromising the line of sight and light. One side of the dining area was a continuation of the wooden wall surface on which a matte black world map was framed. The other side was the back of a foyer shoe cabinet, forming a perfect board for messages and drawing and making the dining area a hallway of memories for the entire family. The TV wall played a significant role in harmonizing the color of the space. Because the color of the foyer door was dark and couldn’t be changed, and because the TV was also dark, a more sedate wooden material was used for the TV wall to reconcile these objects. Such wall gave continuity to the wall in the living room.

CHALLENGE:
The space was nearly 3 meters in height with a thick girder across the top of the TV wall. As the main area of visual intersection in the family's daily life, the huge difference in height was oppressive and was a challenge that must be overcome. Without increasing the size of the girder, the goal of reducing the perception of volume and enriching the space was achieved by creating a slanted ceiling with irregular width, expanding from the highest point to the lowest point of the girder. Indirect lighting was included to enhance the warmth of the space.
