| DESIGN NAME: An Archite Lord Earrings PRIMARY FUNCTION: Game Souvenir INSPIRATION: An Archite Lord earrings design was inspired by the thought to create an evolved bug character in the game and make it into a physical souvenir for women gamers to wear. The concept combines Zerg (a bug tribe in game StarCraft) and Crypt Lord (a bug shaped character in game World of Warcraft), as well as the bugs in our real world. An Archite Lord is a monster that women gamers will expect to meet somewhere in game. By wearing this pair of earrings, the gamers can extend their fancy feeling in their favorite games into the real world. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This pair of earrings are made in 9K gold, set with peridots, topazes, quartzes and coated with green and purple epoxy enamel. The earrings are in a bug shape, not the bugs in the real world but an imagined evolved bug species in the fancy world of computer games like StarCraft and World of Warcraft. The topazes imitate the specks on the bug back. All the bug wings on the earrings are mobile to creat a sparkling effect and it will dangle with the wearer's movement. It's a game souvenir, and also a jewelry made with precious metal and natural gemstones. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This pair of earrings adopts the concepts of 2 bug characters in 2 different games and combines them with the natural bug in the real world. The earring's fancy bug shape, the use of material like epoxy enamel are quite different from the jewelry we often see in the jewelry store. The design will remind the gamers who wear it of their favourite games and allow the fancy world feeling extending into their daily life. The gamers wearing this pair of earrings will also identify themselves as a specific gamer amongst the crowd. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The earrings were designed in August 2018, mainly by Vector Gems' designer Tang Long in Nanjing China. Designer Que Liping who is based in Singapore helped revise the design details in order to make the jewelry manufacturing more practical. The design was sent to a jewelry factory in Singapore in September 2018 and the earrings were finally completed on Jan 17, 2019. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The production of this pair of earrings is a combination of 3D modeling and 3D printing, as well as the traditional jewelry handcraft. JewelCAD software was used to make the 3D model of the earring meatal base. It was then printed into wax/resin model, and followed by metal casting, enamel coating, gemstone setting and polishing, which steps were all handcrafted. Materials: Metal: 9K yellow gold Gemstones:natral blue topaz, natural white topaz, natural peridot, fancy shape, total 1.36ct Coating: epoxy enamel, purple and green color SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total weight: 18.42 grams (a pair) Length: 37mm Width: 12-40mm Thickness: 7mm (the thickest part) TAGS: game jewelry, jewelry souvenir for gamers, game themed souvenir, gold, StarCraft, World of Warcraft, game related products RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design takes reference of the bug shaped characters in game StarCraft and World of Warcraft and combine them with the features of natural bug. After the jewelry design is finalized , we used Zbrush and JewelCAD to create the 3D model of the metal base. After that, epoxy enamel is applied on the surface of metal to elaborate the fresh purple and green colour,, which usually cannot be achieved by plating precious metals. Finally gemstones in diversified colours and shapes are set to mock up the bug specks. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge is how to combine realistic concept with imagined fancy concept when designing the shape of the earrings. First, it is necessary to look like a bug in the real world, rather than any other animals. The design needs to be realistic. Second, gamers will be able to recognize it at the first glance that it is a character from computer games.
