DESIGN NAME: Diavelo Folding
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding Electric Bicycle
INSPIRATION: The Diavelo Origami is inspired by the art of origami. It is elegant, it is beautiful and it is light.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This folding bike is folded by push on a botton. It folds nice and easy. Without any hinges or mecanical folding mechanisms. It is absolutely the first of its kind. The holistic design also keeps space for integrated light systems. The motor is integrated together with the crankset as one unit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We have done research in aerodynamics, weight ratio to stiffness of the frames. This is a totally new method in the electric bicycles industry where those parameters mentioned has not been explored before now with our new folding bicycle product.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 18 month from first sketch to the finalized product.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product is realized in carbon materials in order to keep the weight down to a minimum. The use of carbon could also ensure us to make shapes that was not possible to realize in aluminium.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Fully folding bike. 120 cm x 44 cm x 101 cm 12 Kilo.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The electric bike is lighter than other electric bikes because of the fact that the battery is an external part of the bicycle. This makes the bicycle a hybrid. With the battery in the back pack it is an electric bike. With the battery out of the frame it is a normal conventional folding bike. The first of it's kind. We have researched the position and the potential of the bike by using and collecting insights from users of traditional folding bikes.
CHALLENGE: The biggest creative challenge in this project has been to create a fine balance between having a solid and sturdy product but at the same time keep the weight down. Another big challenge has been to build as many safety features into the product as possible.
