DESIGN NAME: Wrapped
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rings
INSPIRATION: Eschers endless tapes are the inspiration for the rings wrapped. Escher illustrated impossible perspectives and endless tapes. Wrapped is a reminiscence to the endless tape, build with sapphires. The stones aren't set, they are fixed at a thin thread made from white gold. So Wrapped looks like a tiny necklace twisted around a finger.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Wrapped is a ring design in which the ring is twisting around itself. Furthermore the sapphires decorating the ring behave like a string, because the stones are pierced and usually used for necklaces. To offer matching jewelry there is a necklace made from the same sapphires available as well.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Wrapped are made from brillant faceted yellow and orange sapphires, drilled to use it as a necklace. I put the necklace at the finger and twisted it around itself. the brilliance of the stones was beautiful and I decided to build what i saw as a ring.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The rings Wrapped are built in 2017 in Langen, near Frankfurt/Main Germany. They were displayed at IHM (Internationale Fair), Munich, Germany

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To make a wearable ring that looks like a smooth necklace I build a halfpipe from 750 rose gold. This halfpipe is twisted around itself and provides the shape of the ring. It has to fit exactly to the sapphires, so they can lie in it and seem to float around the finger. The color of the rose gold is highlights the color of the sapphires.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Specifications: 750 rose-gold with Sapphires in orange and yellow (Padparadscha-sapphires).
Dimensions: approx. diameter 40mm and 25mm wide

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Escher illustrates impossible structures. My aim was a wearable ring with safe set precious stones. To combine a delicate appearance with a solid and safe handling I had to do some research.
CHALLENGE: To make a necklace usually a string is threatened through the drilled sapphires. This kind of setting wouldn't be safe to wear it as a ring. So I thread all the sapphires to a gold-thread and soldered the ends together. Soldering in close proximity to precious stones can damage them, so I used a PUK to be sure the sapphires remain unscathed.
