DESIGN NAME:
Sewn in gemstones

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Jewelry Bezel

INSPIRATION:
I like to knit or to sew, so I wondered if there could be a safe way to fix gemstones by metal-threads. I had to find a way of building the bezel like a frame to have the space for tiny holes. This frame is quite extensive and so a brillant contrast to the airy metal-threads. The assembly of the sewing is stringent and clear, emphasizing the brilliance of the gemstones.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
There are many different ways to set a gemstone. However, to sew a gemstone in its bezel is a new and creative way. The bezel is made especially for each gemstone. There are tiny holes in the bezel, so that the gold- or silverthread can be sewn around the gemstone.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Usually a bezel should remain very much in the background. The gemstone has all the attention. In my design the bezel is jewelry itself. The way of setting the stone in this kind of bezel is by sewing the stone in with airy metal-threads - which highlights the gemstone.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The fist gemstone I set in this way was at about 2005. Since then I set a lot of stones in that special way and made different kind of jewelry.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
I built a bezel from gold or silver, each fitting to the individual gemstone. The bezel can be used as a pendant, earrings, or a ring. The gemstone is sewn with a gold- or silver-thread of diameter 0,25mm by hand into the bezel. Gemstones have to be round-shaped, that's all. They can be faceted or cabouchon, it can even pearls.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Specifications: 925 silver, 585 or 750 withe-, yellow- or rose-gold. Dimensions: depending at the gemstones approx. diameter 15mm and 12mm high

TAGS:
bezel, jewelry, gold, silver, gemstone, pearl, goldsmith, sewing, handmade

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Transforming the technique of sewing soft strands into a technique to sew durable metal-threads required all my experience.

CHALLENGE:
To find the perfect width of the frame and the segmentation for the tiny holes was a challenge. Making the bezel functional and safe - and in a good and clear design was worth to make some experiments.
