DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Winter Ball

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Jewelry

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for this project comes from the dancing ball scenes in the musical "Rudolf"; which is the story of Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria and his lover, Baroness Mary Vetsera. Since the seasonal background of the musical was winter, I decided to create the snowflakes in Art Nouveau style, using intricate and curved lines.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Unlike the other rings designed for multiple fingers, this ring has a rail on the back. This gives comfortable movement to the finger and allows the wearer to wear the ring in both one finger and two finger styles by turning the angle of the rings. Both ring and earrings are layered so the Art Nouveau style snowflakes design shows better when they are being worn.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The body part of the ring with the rail is created in two parts, the rail part and the cap. Two ring shanks are free moving inside the main body as they are separate items inserted into the rail crevasse of the aforementioned body piece. After the rings are inserted, the body part is capped by soldering. The ring size can be adjustable before the cap part is soldered.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2018 and finished in February 2019 in Carlsbad, CA, USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Every piece is created in Rhino (3D modeling) and casted in sterling silver. All the snowflakes with posts are soldered on the body of the jewelry afterward

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Ring: with ringsize 6.5_ 43.9mm(W)x31.9mm(D)x37.7mm(H) Earring: Each_ 34.1mm(W)x45.9mm(D)x17mm(H)(Without Post)

TAGS:
Silver, 3D Printing, Silver Jewelry, Art Nouveau, Ring, Earring

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research started with observing and understanding the mood of the musical. Afterwards, the research focused on the use of intricate, curved line work which shows the best in the Art Nouveau period.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part was of the design to model the ring to make it functional. Thinking about the proper weight for comfortable daily wearing as well as the proper thickness of the ring requires a lot of measurements and calculation.
