DESIGN NAME: Under Current
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Photographic light paintings
INSPIRATION: Inspiration was found in the mechanisms of photography. The idea to take the pulse of the city through the energy of the light that hits the film and results in a reaction, that can be made apparent by the chemical development process. This is the basic driver for this photographic exploration. While the image forms in the camera it registers the energy of light as well as the movement in the city. Taking, as it ware, the hart beat of the city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Undercurrent is a series of abstract light paintings created by liberating the medium photography of its restrictions imposed by shutter speed and F-stop. The still-camera is used to catch and materialise light and at the same time challenge the unexpected. What has been caught is not an existing, realistic image, but something that seems hidden behind reality; something that expresses itself as the flow of energy. The creation of these images is purely analogue, no digital manipulation is used.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is photographic art.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in 2002, duration until present.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Photography and Photo Manipulation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Both colour negative film as well as colour positive film is used. The development process is chemical.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Eventual reproductions can be any size.
TAGS: Film analogue colour positive negative art
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project entails a research into the different effects of the exposed film and the development process. Exposure time and aperture are intuitively determined. The resulting strips of exposed film are carefully selected and cropped to from the artworks.
CHALLENGE: The exposure of the film is entirely experimental in the sense that it is impossible to have an exact idea how the images will come out. The challenge is to find a good balance with between the speed of the film used, the aperture and the duration of the exposure. This is all determined intuitively.
