DESIGN NAME:
Tut

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Pot Holder

INSPIRATION:
Tut is a product design which enables the cooking or heating pots to be temporarily fixed on the gas cooker. The design eliminates the need for a handle to hold a pot. Thanks to TUT, beside aiding people without any disability, the orthopedically disabled people will be able to do their job easily and children will be prevented from accidentally dropping the pots on the gas cooker. Thus, the design will supply a healtier environment where home accidents can be reduced.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
TUT enables the user to be able to lock the heating pot on the cooker in a few steps by only using one hand. Since the cooking pots such as small pot, sauce pan are not heavy enough, the pot can be moved on the cooker while the ingredients are being mixed. The user is forced to hold the handle of a pot in one hand while he has to hold a spoon with the other hand. The lockability supplies a security measure for children and ease the cooking for orthopedically disabled people.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
There are cast iron bars that will carry the heating pot over the burner head in gas cooker types. The designed product is placed on this bar with only one hand (the recess on the bottom will be a tip to the user) and the movable part is rotated 90 degrees to lock in the desired position. Then, the pot inclined to the previously fixed product. In the last stage, the second product will compress the heating pot and the pot will be compressed by accommodating the first product.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in May 2018 in Ankara, Turkey and finished in November 2018 in Ankara Turkey.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The heat resistance is at the forefront and critical in both the plastic parts and the part for compressing the pot as the whole product is exposed to heat. Heat-resistant silicone will be used in the part that holds the pot. The other body parts will be produced by injection from recyclable plastics, which will not become harmful to health when heated.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Length: 4cm, Width:9 cm, Height: 15 cm. It consists of a main body, a rotatable handle and metal compressors placed in the body.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Qualitative research was conducted to discover the daily cooking behavior and habits of people by observation and interviewing techniques. The participants were at different ages and abilities intentionally. The critical details were observed about the ways people hold a pot on the cooker, the techniques they use while mixing the ingredients, and other jobs they need to do during the mixing process. Form of the design was determined according to the needs, habits and production methods.

CHALLENGE:
The most challenging part of this project was to design a product that enables people to use the other hand during the cooking process and that would ease the lives of the orthopedically disabled people and children under the concept of "design for all". Previous design solutions were lacking for these approaches. The design problem has been solved with a new approach, in which both people with or without disability and security of children was considered.
