DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
MyDrop

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Teardrop trailer

INSPIRATION:
These small caravans were invented in the USA in the 1950s, where they are still very popular. Their tear-shaped design has become an archetype, but this does not prevent a wide variety of interpretations by the Do It Yourself movement. For some these tiny caravans are the symbol of an idealized past, for others that of a delicate insertion into nature, light and the elements. In this project, I have sought to reconcile these two worlds.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mydrop combines wood and aluminium with a search for the beautiful line. Carved plywood add a generous roundness to the flat surfaces on both sides. Mydrop's design is Vintage, but with modernity. The doors are wide, the height of the floorboard allows you to sit down keeping your feet on the ground. This vehicle, coupled to a small car, is ideal for travelling alone or in pairs throughout Europe.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
There is no need for a powerful car, a special permit, a huge garage. Mydrop passes under the gantries. It is easy to handle it by hand. The room is isolated from the smells of the kitchen, located at the back, in the open air, sheltered from the raised tailgate. The front trunk can hold a table and two folding chairs as well as a rounded barnum. In the centre of the bed, it is possible to unfold a round table, deploying a kind of sock on the floor to rest the feet. Doors mounted on friction hinges can be left ajar. Mosquito nets equip all openings.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The order was placed in January 2018. The preliminary studies and design lasted until June. Assembly space installation and both prototypes manufacturing took place from June to September 2018. All took place in Patrick Sarran's workshop in Toulouse-France. Both Teardrops were exhibited at the Paris-Le Bourget Salon des Véhicules de loisir October 2018, and at Montpellier Salon de l'hotellerie de plein air, November 2018.The manufacturing files were finalized in March 2019 for the pre-series.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The running gear consists of an axle with two wheels and a drawbar that has received European approval. The floorboard, the walls are made of sandwich panels made of wood and foam, aluminium and foam, specially formulated for this model. The design and machining are digital. The interconnection of the files allows an exact correspondence between the sub-sets. A digital machining centre has been ordered by the manufacturer for the small series production of the vehicle walls and furniture. Textile, electrical and sheet metal parts are subcontracted to nearby companies.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
My client wanted a vintage style Teardrop trailer. My research has opened my eyes to an abundant movement, from Tiny Houses to Teardrops, through tree houses, marked by Do It Yourself. Trying a typology of these achievements, I observed two antagonistic tendencies: Collectors for whom nothing beats an old Teardrop, futurists attached to a sober life in nature, light, elements, and not necessarily to teardrop design elsewhere. I tried the difficult conciliation of the both : a true Teardrop bright, clear, connected, in which you can feel you outside.

CHALLENGE:
There was everything to do, the design, the brand, making two prototypes, imagining the industrial processes. The constraints were revealed over time: materials, formats, assemblies, hardware parts, electricity, sandwich panel formulation, waterproofing, road approval, etc... It was necessary to find a manufacturer for the panels, a metallurgist, a CNC subcontractor, and set up processes. Finally, after many adventures, both prototypes were successfully exhibited on time at the Salon des Véhicules de Loisir/ November 2018/Le Bourget.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Hundred Miles

PROFILE:
The designer Patrick Sarran has the hardware and software to design products on screen, and a large workshop to produce prototypes. He is well known in the field of craftsmanship. Laura Ballario, her client, had the project to create a Teardrop production unit in the region. Supported by her father, an industrialist who had already worked with Patrick Sarran, she approached the designer to materialize her project and create the Hundred Miles brand. Laura Ballario established a 600 m2 production workshop equipped with a machining centre in Albi in February 2019. Hundred Miles is now a start-up dedicated to the manufacture of the Mydrop model.
