DESIGN NAME: Vortex
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rings
INSPIRATION: The Vortex rings are inspired by the impact that tornados can have on many lives in certain parts of the world; this can be as serious as human beings losing their most precious possessions form one moment to the next when a devastating tornado sweeps across the lands.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The vortex rings were originally designed as statement rings for bold personalities who love unconventional jewellery. In this case, they symbolised the human fragility against the power of nature. When wearing this ring, whilst bearing in mind what represents, it empowers the owner as if is taking control over natural forces in their hands.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: These rings are tactile jewellery, they are designed to make us feel and remember how it feels to be powerless in front of the power of nature.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 and finished in February 2017 while I was studying at the prestigious Birmingham School of Jewellery, UK.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In order to create the movement and rough texture of a tornado, on the head of the rings, the metal 3D printing is used and the shanks are formed by hand and then the two parts are soldered together.
The rings consist of two parts to facilitate the combination of different metals. They are custom-made and the client can choose their preferred metals.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research behind this project was firstly about gathering knowledge regarding how tornados "uncontrolled natural forces that create wild air movements" are created, how they develop and extinguish and what happens before and after that event.
Secondly, extensive research about Metal 3D printing with precious metals within the jewellery industry, the type of machine used with its limitations and the design requirements such as how to design my pieces in a way and angles that require the minimum support for successful printing.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to create a piece that comes across interesting and memorable, and also keeping each design slightly different from one another while not losing the concept.
