| DESIGN NAME: DUDO PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bathroom accessories INSPIRATION: Nowadays, most of people are living in a fast-paced life, and deindustrialization starts to become one of the most popular words in design industry, which is to retreat people from the daily stressful conditions. Instead of applying ordinary elements onto the products, DUDO is mainly inspired by the style of Memphis and expression of two-dimensional graphics. By the contrast of various colors or personalities, it will break the traditional constraint and boundaries of beauty-appreciation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Bathroom is not only a maintenance for life where we live, but also a place that normally a day begins/ends, which should reflect users’ finding inspiration and setting tone for their home. Therefore, based on the notions of minimalism, multifunctional and jolly, the goal for DUDO is to empower a vigorous environment within the compact but the most important room in people’s home. The products maintain a high level of simplicity, which is produced by one piece of metal only through several bending. Moreover, the design of lively colors and distinctive forms make the narrow space in the bathroom becomes fresh and new. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The towel bar and tissue holder are being held on the wall by screws, and my team develop a screw cap to hide as well as make it a one-part design, which help the product carry an emotion of a simple two-dimensional graphics. The hand mirror can be placed on top of the container, leaned on the table or grabbed by hands, which is designed based on exploring another usability of the traditional container lids. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is a 14-week (Sept 2018 – Dec 2018) design project in Pasadena, Los Angeles. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Towel bar and tissue holder: Stainless steel by metal bending, finished by powder coding. Hand mirror (Handle): Stainless steel by metal bending, finished by powder coding. Hand mirror (Body and container): Ash wood, finished by wood stained. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Towel bar (Main body): W 650mm x D 86.35mm x H 85mm. (Screw cap): W 12mm x D 4mm x H 12mm. Toilet paper holder (Main body): W 200mm x D 95mm x H 81.35mm. (Screw cap): W 12mm x D 4mm x H 12mm. Hand mirror (Handle): W 153.18mm x D 25mm x H 39mm. (Body): W 140mm x D 140mm x H 15mm. (Container): W 140mm x D 140mm x H 68.18mm. The towel bar and toilet paper holder can be installed on the wall by screws, and they can be tactfully hidden by the design of the screw cap, which will not be obvious to notice. The hand mirror with a decorative handle can be seen as the lid of the container when it is not used, which reserve a well-integrated appearance of design. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With the fast development of human social society, especially in the well-developed cities, most of people carry more burden than the past times. They have a strong demand of a better-quality life. Since the bathroom is the most important room to consider at home, it is necessary to develop an environment to help people release their stress from daily routines. However, pursuing pure minimalism is not a solution in this case, because the products will be too insipid to appreciate after a period of time. The research is to understand the actual demand of target consumers, and explore the possibilities of developing a relaxation atmosphere in the smallest room at home. CHALLENGE: The most important part to go through in the process of design is to develop a family form language for each product to share with besides color and material. Then, while the products show a high standard of being simplicity, we also try to endow them a personality, which make them lively rather than complex.
