DESIGN NAME:
ZAD & O

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lamps

INSPIRATION:
Since I am a passionate about skiing, every year I spend at least few days on Kopaonik mountain. This mountain is situated in south-east of Serbia Just beside the ski slope there are certain objects in the shape of ball, and they seem like white glowing balls getting out of the snow. Considering that a real wood dominates in my design and thinking about the beauty of the mountain, as a result of all of it I created O lamps, inspired by the glow of those balls.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
O Lamps are unique regarding shape and material they are made of. The lampshade is made of wood with the glowing part barely coming out from the central part of the lamp. There are two possible options - O Lamp and ZAD Lamp. O Lamp is a low, wooden ball placed on a circular base and ZAD is a wooden ball on a stool which gets thinner from the bottom to the middle part of the stool. It is also placed on the circular base but in this case it has the appearance of the champagne glass.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Even the O Lamps have a wooden ball as a lampshade, the light effect is great because the half of the lightening body gets outside of the lamp. It means that O Lamps give quite enough light. The lamps are imagined to serve as the vases on the table because of their sculptural shape and size. They do not take too much space - diameter is 20cm and their appearance is very sophisticated which makes them ideal solution for minimalist designed interiors, which are meant to be in accordance with nature.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2018 in Cacak, Serbia and finished in October 2018, and it was exhibited in Belgrade Furniture Fair in November 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
While making O Lamps, all that glue-sticking process was very complicated. In the following step we should have cut the wooden pieces to the length of 25cm. Since they were very heavy, the cutting process became a big problem. We noticed that the lumbers had cracks in the inner parts. We chose a few good pieces and started shaping them. Meanwhile, we encountered a new problem, a few additional pieces got cracked on the lathe machine because the adhesive did not work well. At the end, we got only seven of instead of thirty. After that we did everything by hands, grinding and oiling them by the white pigmented oils. Between the wooden part and the lightening part, we added white, thin, metal tubes which made additional protection, but the whole lightning effect became even more sophisticated.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
While thinking about the lamp, first I made a ball out of Styrofoam and then cut it out slowly with a knife. I glued the Styrofoam parts one by one to each other and decided what is the perfect thickness. At the beginning we wanted to make the lamps with the diameters of 30cm, but we give up on that because we did not have that size big glue press in which could fit the material of that thickness. The ball got the wanted shape on lathe machine and the sharpening turned out better than we expected. First we put a smaller hole for the light, but later made it wider so we could place the tube between the wooden and lightening part. After few test, we finally got what we wanted.

CHALLENGE:
The most difficult part of the whole creative process was how to reduce the heavy wooden timber to the subtle ball. All the way through the action the problems came out one by one. Even it does not seem to be very complicated, it turned out opposite, from the gluing of material, cutting or shaping, almost everything would become a problem. Because lot of work was done to finally shape and perfect curve and surface, using pigmented white oil and wax, O Lamps look light and sophisticated. Designer wanted to bring nature into the living space.
