Compound Saw

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Flexible platform

INSPIRATION:
Compound saw is a kind of multifunctional power tool, which combines the functions of miter saw and tables saw. However, the fixed upper platform can be a huge trouble when people are using a traditional compound saw. Not only the sight is severely blocked by it, the weight of the platform is also a burden when press the handle for cutting, especially angled cutting. Therefore, we try to design a compound saw, which is easy to use and without operation interference, by rebuilding the structure.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The new upper platform, combined with a lock system, is narrowed down as much as possible to reduce weight and leave more space for supervision. In addition, two flexible platforms on both side with the base, used as additional support in miter saw mode, can be raised, rotated and locked on top of the machine to become the platform of table saw mode. This provides a larger operating platform than traditional compound saw and a clear order for switching mode.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In miter saw mode, firstly you can place the material against the fence on the saw bench. Then, hold the material and lower the saw to make a cross cut. This machine can also achieve angle cut and bevel cut by turning the saw and the base or by adjusting angle of the ‘neck’. When cutting large stock, you can change the machine into table saw mode. Firstly, lock the saw at the lowest position. Then, raise the two flexible platforms from the bottom to the top and lock them by pressing the big purple switch at the center. After that, place and adjust the table saw fence to get the cutting width that you want. Finally, you can place the material on the upper table and push it towards the blade to make a rip cut.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in Ningbo in July 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Although there is a giant number of components, most of them can be manufactured by casting or injection modeling in the factory. For the base and the flexible platforms, they can be manufactured by casting and surface machining. The platform supports can be made from aluminum extrusion profiles. The other plastic parts, such as the blade guard and the motor cover, can be manufactured by injection molding. Hinges and saw blade can be purchased from the other suppliers.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
In the table saw mode, the overall dimension of this machine is 545mm*400mm*324mm. In the miter saw mode, the width will change into 841mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Tangible product analysis consists of structure analysis and problem analysis.

CHALLENGE:
For this project, it may require high manufacturing tolerance control to ensure the saw can be locked at the right position in order for the two platforms to be nicely placed on top of it without big gaps, which will affect the precision of the tool.
