DESIGN NAME: Ballon
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Lamp
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from a yellow balloon held by a little boy. That balloon gave me a hit. It fits right in with my idea of levitation. It has a nice shape that perfectly fits the home setting. It can create a sense of space and technology.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ballon is a levitating wall lamp that hovers by magnetic levitation and is powered through the air by the wireless charging technic. The light can be controlled by the pull cord switch and mobile app. Also, the app can set it in different colors, brightness and color temperature to create your own environment. Based on the feature the light can float, the top and the base are separated from each other, so that it has more ways to use and more different environments to use. The top can move to any place as an independent light source.
It can be a table lamp or an atmosphere lamp or a portable light source or more ... This design not only uses the amazing effect of magnetic levitation to bring visual impact to people but also uses this feature to create more modes of use and bring a different experience to people.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the user gently places the top over the center of the base about the distance between two fingers, there is a force that controls it to balance. When the top is positioned exactly at the center of the base, then gently releases the hands and the top will float by the electromagnets. The user can control the light on/off by the pull cord switch or the mobile app, and the app also can adjust the color, brightness and color temperature of the light. Because of its separable features, the top can be used alone.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in July 2018 in San Francisco and finished in September in 2018 in San Francisco.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using electromagnets to let the top float in the air base on magnetic levitation technology. The top is powered by the Wireless power transfer. The soft silica gel will be used in the light cover. The ABS plastic material will be used in the main body and it is produced by plastic injection molding technology. The aluminum alloy will be used in the wall bracket and it is anodized to resemble brass.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I have done a lot of research on magnetic levitation technology and wireless power transmission. In order to let users naturally feel the technology in the product. I have gained a lot of design inspiration from people's lives and have tried many different solutions to make the combination of technology and products more clever, rather than simply putting technology into the product.
CHALLENGE: It is easy to come up with a concept, it is not so easy to make a concept work. Because of the magnetic levitation, whenever a new idea comes out, the size and weight of the product must be taken into account.
The weight limit has become a big challenge. In addition, when designing a wall lamp, one point cannot be ignored that is the connection of the lamp and wall.
