| DESIGN NAME: Glow Table PRIMARY FUNCTION: Reception Desk INSPIRATION: The idea was to make a minimalist entry element which not only is useful but also to demonstrate the use of hand crafted work in terms of workmanship and detail, and look at light as an added aspect to enhance the way furniture is interpreted and to vocabulate it in new ways. Light being the most apt essence in its instrumentation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This reception desk design is an entry feature , which has inbuilt system,thus the table glows when lit. The material used for building the table itself has been used to craft out the fenestration design and with the altered method of in-out edges of design ,which when lit produces the dramatic glow in-spite of being a single monolithic element.Functionally OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The glow table is a combine of a front desk- table and a lighting element. An interactive design , engages the visitor immediately and informs the user about the nature of the retail space its placed in. Since the retail space also deals with lighting, an innovative approach is used to express this in a regular furniture unit, it captivates and engages them to be inquisitive about its use and function. When lit the light is shone and when passive and not lit the front fenestration work adds a visual appeal due to the design clad from the front. its an innovative use and functional piece of furniture. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: When working with light and back- lit elements, it is seen that light work different from general lighting. When light penetrates thru material it creates various tonal lighting which creates patterns and visual presentation due to the thickness of material from which light is shone, and thus the material begins to glow. This contributed towards the unique elemental interpretation of the glow table. Realization process included having several samples of thickness and of pattern and material to be made samples of , and arrive at the shade shadow and the intensity of light and the distance from which it is lit. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Its a 9 feet long and 3 feet wide table with ends till the ground and the glow element in the front so the visitor can look at it , on the other end is storage and seating space for the receptionist or anyone who handles the front desk . The table is designed so that it seems light in weight and independent, and on the inner edge has utility shelves and drawers. The glow panel is hung in the front with the ends and top of the table, space for light is housed between the panel and back frame. TAGS: contemporary furniture ,furniture design , new designs , retail space , innovative back-lit table , white table, reception table, curve table, innovation , glow table RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Glow table panel needed to be a solid translucent material that has an etchable soft quality to it. Short listing alike properties of such materials, behavior study with light , heat resistance with light source , and study of these with its impact to desired design. Led us to innovate a unique design that redefines to what is possible with light and combination of materials in unison. CHALLENGE: The most important aspect of this design was to show the glow and the shade-shadow effect and its significant depth that is visible inspite of the thickness of the material being only 12mm. The table panel when lit has more depth thus creating an interesting illusion using creative geometry and keeping structural integrity and strength to maintain stability of material. Several batches of varied geometry were tried and then this pattern was arrived at. The result is a illusion with several yin -yang depth inspite of the pattern being same.
