DESIGN NAME: Stand Steel
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bookmark
INSPIRATION: The bookmark splits into two different parts, both utilized as a bookmark in different ways. In order to achieve maximum functionality of it you have to go through a destructive but fun process. From this irreversible transformation the main object will emerge which resembles a human moving figure. Daily movement of our bodies is the main inspiration that produces this figure. The figure is actually pointing to the appropriate line as if it reaches out to it with an elongated hand as an arrow.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Stand Steel is a bookmark, ideal for reading lovers and design enthusiasts, negotiating its initial purpose. Using modern techniques such as laser cutting, this bookmark was designed to reinvent the function of a traditional bookmark. Instead of just identifying the page of your book, it will also show you the paragraph or the line you left last time you were reading your book. It plays with positive - negative space and it mimics the figure of a person showing to you the necessary point.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The bookmark is an object that will have to transform and never reverse back to its initial state. This is mandatory in order to achieve its maximum potential.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2017 and it was finalized in January 2018. All the design and manufacturing process took place in Thessaloniki, Greece.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The product was made with laser cutting technology on stainless steel material. The logo was made with etching. All the digital drawings for cutting and etching were made in CAD software by Karyon Design.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Stainless steel with satin finish,
Dimensions: 50mm x 120mm x 1mm (thickness),
Packaging: recycled paper box.
TAGS: Bookmark, steel, stainless, lasercut, inox, etching, figure, arrow, reading, marker
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was mainly focused on experimenting with different sizes in order to achieve the most suitable one. Samples were made in order to determine the proper weight and thickness since the bookmark has to operate comfortably plus it has to be easily separated in two pieces as it is supposed to.
CHALLENGE: The objective of this project was to create an arrow shaped clip inspired by a human form, an idea which was a creative challenge itself. The main focus throughout the design process was to establish the right proportions and measures. The unique aspect of splitting it into two pieces was a challenge both for the design and manufacturing. The proper thickness dictated if the product would succeed in its initial purpose.
