RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project is situated in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and as it possesses large windows, spacious balcony and spectacular mountain view, the entrance facing balcony does not obstruct any view at all, therefore the public area remains open-plan. The design for the interior is to highlight the aesthetics of craft tradition through refined line work, changing materiality, also softening the sharpness of the clear-cut line work at the spatial corner. In terms of living functionalities, the design was to cater for storage needs of the client of clothing and shoes, by planning for sufficient cabinet volumes, of which the perceived shape was virtualized by designating them as suspended and recessed volumes; besides, in order to allow easy storage, showcasing of collectibles from all over the world, and many books of the client, the bookshelf of the study area behind the living room sofa consists of open-shelf and enclosed storage in creating a layered visual effect, in addition to fulfilling the practical needs.
CHALLENGE: The challenges in the design process came from the synergy of different materials, of which each has different rigidity that represents certain technical difficulties in form-shaping and junction-making, such as the zinc-coated metal plates utilized on arc-shaped ceiling and recessed-and-protruded bookshelves, which resulted in having taken much time to overcome in the construction, in terms of cornering or surface maintenance. Also, while creating the new classical styling, as well as allowing the spatiality to complement the client's collectibles, which is indeed a key point of consideration in design.
