PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Electric Kettle

INSPIRATION:
The pot is designed for all coffee lovers with the best pour-over brewing experience. Everyone can brew a nice cup of coffee with full control of water pour speed, which is pivotal to pour-over coffee brewing. It is designed to reduce trial-and-error or frustration beginners might encounter with using the traditional coffee pots.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design together with stainless steel finish of the pot creates an ultimate pour-over coffee brewing experience. The arched spout is precisely designed for a slow, steady and accurate pour control that let water flow in concentric circles. It can accurately maintain the desired temperature with the auto keep warm function.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Users can start boiling water by setting temperature from 71°C to boil 100°C. The start button will start flashing. The current temperature will be displayed and gradually increases until it reaches the boiling point. The start button will turn red and there will be a long beep sound. Press the timer button and gently saturate grounds with hot water. Then pour the water in a circular motion on the top center of the coffee bed and allow the coffee to "bloom". It will then switch to keep-warm function automatically. Slowly pour the remaining water, the total brew time is 3 to 4 minutes. Then a nice cup of coffee is ready to serve.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2015 and finished in February 2017 in Hong Kong, and was exhibited in U.S in July 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
There is a digital power base that provides precision in temperature, contact time, and pour control. It avoids the chance of overheating the water that destroys the flavor of crafted coffee. The digital display is water-resistant which avoid spillage and splashing. There is an option of fast heat-up: 1200 W for fast heat up. Gooseneck spout designed specifically for a slow, steady and accurate pour to maintain the optimal coffee brewing experience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Interviews are conducted with professional baristas as well as home users. We interviewed with the baristas to find out what is the optimal water speed, water capacity as well as the best materials of the pots. The main goal with pour over coffee is even extraction of coffee beans’ flavor. We interviewed with the home users to understand their pain points of using the traditional coffee pots to brew coffee, we found out there are common problems of the uncontrollable water pour speed, the constant needs of refilling heated water, the lack of in-built temperature gauge and timer. The precision pot is a combination of design and technology that solves the problems.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge is to perfect the precision of the design, especially the sprout to create the optimal and user-friendly coffee brewing experience. So the team has spent months to craft the perfect angel and design of the sprout, the electrical boiling and warming technology and find the best material.
