Monday Floor Lamp by Kristof De Bock

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Monday

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Floor Lamp

INSPIRATION:
The idea was to design a floor lamp without the standard standing position. Designer was looking for a new starting point and let the form of the product start from there. And while rethinking the structure, why not question materials? The unconventional use of plywood adds a nice grain.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Monday is a floor lamp that is tensed between floor and ceiling by means of an Ayous stick. The cylindrical part contains the fitting for the light bulb and is made of multiple pieces of plywood that are glued together. This part can be raised or lowered on the stick for the best result.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The support has to be around 3% longer than the height of the ceiling. The light fixture has to be placed on the support before it is tensed. This fixture can be changed in height by loosening the button on the back. A mirror bulb light is prefered, but others may have a different opinion. Al is well as long is it fits the E27 socket.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The idea for this lamp crossed the designers mind in the beginning of 2018. He started working on the first prototype in April 2018 in his workshop in Ronse (Belgium) and the object was first shown publicly in October 2018.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The armature is made of plywood that is cut circular and glued with the flat sides together. This happens in different stages as it has to be sandpapered on the inside, connected with the cable and metal button on the back and provide the holes for the vertical support. Once this part is completely connected, it has the be sandpapered intensely and varnished. The support has a reversed T-shape. The connection of these 2 parts has to be quite strong.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 21 cm x Depth 30 cm x Height 250 cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The first item to explore was the support. As it is tensed between floor and ceiling, we had to find a flexible material. We examined metal, aluminum and wood in different forms (square, hollow,..). Once we picked wood, we had to find the best kind in function of flexibility and esthetics. The Ayous barely has a fragile button. Secondly, the electric cable was a worry. The cylinder has to be sandpapered and finished rather intense while the cable is already connected.

CHALLENGE:
The designer wanted to develop an unconventional standing lamp that was not standing in a traditional way. 1) By exploring the gravity and its behavior to simple structures and materials. The support (Ayous) was picked as it appeared to be a flexible wood type. 2) By using materials in a way they are not intended. The cylinder is made of plywood that is glued together on the flat side.
