DESIGN NAME: Greater
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Grater
INSPIRATION: Current graters on the market can put undue pressure on the wrist and arms. Thinking about ergonomic design, I took inspiration from bikes handles which are easier to hold.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Current grater design puts heavy strain users wrists and arms throughout use. This concept is designed thinking of the users wrist angle, so that even with prolonged use there is little strain on the wrists and arms.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users are able to handle the grater on their workstation employing a natural and comfortable grip. There are four grater types, allowing for a variety of different grating situations, relieving wrist pressure. If the grater is turned upside down, it doubles a colander taking advantage of the existing holes in the grater.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2017 in Paris and finished in December 2017 in Bordeaux.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The concept consists of three parts: handle, body and grater. The handles are injection molded while the grater metal plates are cut and attached to the main body afterwards.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 150 mm x 192.50 mm x 120 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Initially, I constructed a prototype in order to find the ideal wrist angle to allow for grating for extended periods of time without strain on the wrists and arms. Next, I asked neighbors and friends to test different prototypes, where the handle-to-body direction and angle varied, documenting the process using pictures and videos to analyze later. Throughout the process, I was primarily observing the users to find the ideal handle thickness.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the process was finding the most convenient, on average, way for users to grate at any angle.
