DESIGN NAME: E&C DECO Interior Design
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: This project epitomizes how technology may stem from humanity, by considering the significant age difference between the client couple and addressing individual preferences throughout all aspects of the new residence. Firstly, in terms of styling, the male client prefers marble texture and the simplistic look and feel, while the female client prefers the refined and romantic quality of the classical style, so ultimately, the design team decided to adopt artistic painting, and material variations to create an intimate dialogue between the space and the occupants.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As the project is located in an apartment building with elevators and is merely 96 square meters in area size, it was a conscious decision of the client to seek an overhaul renovation. Firstly, it was to remove all of the original partitioning and decoration for a brand new layout of two fully functional rooms with minimized corridor, and enlarged public area, so as to accentuate the connection between living room, dining room, and the open kitchen, before adding quintessential storage spaces by utilizing leftover spaces to satisfy such pragmatic needs.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The construction of higher technical difficulty falls in the kitchen area, as the conversion involves the addition of cold and hot water system, under the premise of leveled kitchen floor without partial floor height variation, the design team needed to use 6cm stainless pipes to facilitate all the necessary pipework within restricted height, while also needs to perform testing to ensure the smooth work process, based on our many year practical experiences, and also in the guest bathroom, as the toilet bowl needs to be relocated, the waste pipe needs to be moved as well.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in June 2017 and finished in January 2018 in Taipei City.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As much as the preference of the male client for marble, which had a significant impact on construction complexity and future maintenance, so although the design team has deployed marble on various parts of the interior, it also opted for the softer white tone and light beige earthy tone to reconcile client preferences and spatial harmony. As the elegant beige, grey and white colors featured in the living room and dining room, the oak texture was brought in to complement the dark timber color of kitchen island bench elevation and appliance cabinets.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: As there is ample ceiling height to work with for this project, the large size of beams and columns in the public area make the treatment of ceiling very critical in accommodating the living routines of the clients and their family members by ascertaining the exact locations of living room and dining room, before allowing visual access of TV from the dining area, which, on one hand, acts as the interaction axis amongst living room, dining room, and kitchen, on the other hand, it minimizes the perceived physical and visual presence of the column.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As the entrance was design as a smooth prelude to the entire public area of a stern yet soft volume perception. As there is a fascinatingly layered boundary between the living room and dining room, the design team intended to imbue symmetry, optimized elevation, and refined detailing. With the kitchen configured with much practical and aesthetic considerations for a pristine visual composition, the bedrooms adopted processional circulation paths in meandering through various functional spaces of the walk-in closet, sleeping area, reading, and makeup area, and bathroom.
CHALLENGE: The relocation of the electrical wiring and plumbing in the kitchen area, as well as, of the waste pipe in the bathroom account for the most difficult aspect of the entire project construction, mainly due to the fixed location of the service stacks of the building, which limits what can be modified, therefore we must strive for the most beneficial and long term interests, under the site and legal restrictions.
