DESIGN NAME: DECCAN HERALD DESIGNS
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Website Design
INSPIRATION: The main motives behind our design is to allow for a great digital reading experience as research shows sharp increase in online news consumption but 94% of respondents left website because of the design. And, to provide clients with a promising design language that could set benchmarks in India. The concept of unified design is needed more than ever as the portal demands multiple user roles, novel and variety of content every hour and need for scalability, but none has yet tried this.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Being an online news portal, data hierarchy and design scalability were given the utmost importance during the design process. We adopted unified design language, by defining individual elements to ensure unified user experience across platforms. And, also to allow clients to add new sections, admins or micro-sites in future without worrying about the design. For seamless experience an in-depth research was done to provide users with the simplified navigation and data discovery with ease.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To focus user attention on the content we decided against the use of micro-interactions and focused heavily on data hierarchy. However, we implemented unified design in play for number of reasons. For users, it ensures great reading experiences across platforms and for stakeholders it ensures elimination of duplicate work, easy maintenance and upgradation of site and to scale and diversify with the same designs. The concept allows design to rearrange itself and give fresh look without a hassle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in September 2017 in Bangalore and was finished on March 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The methodology we followed is that of discover, define and design. In the discovery phase we researched about industry, competitors, owners and users; insights from research helped us in crafting the information architecture of the website. In define phase, we came out with the high-fidelity wireframes of the main flow and visual design language was set during the designing phase. Usability testing was done at each step to ensure elements of unified design were user centric and fit together.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: We used card sorting and usability testing techniques to iterate the information architecture and typography. Sketch was used for the wireframing; Photoshop and Illustrator were used for visual design. Marvel was used for prototyping. The website was written in html, css & javascript along with the JQuery library. No css frameworks were used which accommodated maximum flexibility.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Industry trends, competitors and users were studies for 2 months to gauge user preferences & behaviours. Questionnaires, direct interviews, active listening, card sorting and user observation techniques were employed in the process. 40 plus respondents with digital orientation for news from the tier 2 cities of Karnataka were surveyed and insights clearly stated the goals, motivation and frustration point of the users leading us to the top five personas and simplified navigation.
CHALLENGE: The major challenge was to bring in the shift in the user’s perception towards an online news platform in India on one hand. And, on the other hand, it was getting clients to agree to implement the never heard before concept of unified designs on a digital publication platform. The Design challenge was to keep all the elements as a part of a greater whole to ensure positive contribution to the system at scale and allow for accessibility.
