DESIGN NAME: Shanghai Jiangwan Football Stadium
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Football Stadium
INSPIRATION: Shanghai Jiangwan Stadium is an old track and field stadium built in 30s for National Games as part of ‘Great Shanghai’ master plan. It has been crowned the No.1 Stadium in Far East and once held an East Asian Games. It has a long rectangular oval shape with four neo-classical style building towers located on each entrance. With its great histories, the building was listed to preserve. In response to the rapid urban development and Shanghai 2050 sport city goal, the inspiration was drawn into to create an ‘Urban Oasis’ - a football stadium integrated with retail departments built within the listed Jiangwan Stadium.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The football seating bowl is carefully embedded into the existing tier structure with an optimised 15 degrees to the west. The southern open area within the existing tier has formed an open greenery park while the northern side has been integrated with a two-storey retail department. A sunken lower bowl has prevented the new building not to well-over the height of preserved entrance gates. A street view corridor study from the west main entrance has been conducted to control the impact. A forest-tree branches structure system has given the stadium a unique character – ‘Urban Oasis’.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: General spectators enter the stadium through the periphery of existing retail brick arcade. They either go straightly down to the lower tier or up to second floor for upper tier. The stadium roof has been extended to cover public realm, particularly the second floor concourse level connected to the existing remained tier. It is aiming to create a public walk way surrounding the building and an accessible sightseeing viewing platform at the top floor of arcade during a non-game mode.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location: Shanghai, China. The project was designed at the end of 2017 as part of feasibility study for a private client and the government.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is looking for an alternative strategy to revitalise old sports facilities, such as those old track and field stadiums which used to be in the sub-urban area in the past. Along with the rapid urban expansion, it has been developed into new urban centre zone. However due to the lacking of development strategies and policies, it has been left over and under-developed. The track and field function will no longer be required due to another better venue is constructed further away from the city.
CHALLENGE: The challenge is how to convert it into a football stadium integrated with existing tiers as well as commercialise sport facilities merged with the surrounding urban blocks. The mass of the embedded football stadium has been well kept in low profile until the spectators pass through the retail arcade. The gesture of respect to the historical building has been well preserved as well as adding a mystical feel to the Football Stadium inside.
