DESIGN NAME: Second Story
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Art
INSPIRATION: There is the huge amount of waste on the street during the Basel Fasnacht, especially confetti. The waste can be transformed into cultural images or critical artifacts. We wanted to show that human behavior, even the waste is part of the art. Thus art and design, combined with the emotions and the playfulness, can be a good medium to draw attention to social issues of the waste. It allows people to find new perceptions of everyday objects and to encourage sustainable behaviors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Second Story is a performance installation that highlights the potential aesthetics of recycled materials. Artists and visitors played recycled materials including confetti and give them a second life story during the event, Basel Fasnacht. Participants could draw their impression in various forms such as sculpture, graffiti, dance, music etc. The volume of artwork generated in the event became an interactive installation that increases public awareness of trashed objects.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Artists started up the event with a short improvisational performance. The artifact opened to any creative thinking. After the performance, both artists and audiences were invited to create any forms using the recycled materials. Attendees could make their own little works of art and place them anywhere on the installation for everyone else to enjoy. If they want, they could simply take other’s work home. In this sense, the movement of participants has been exhibited.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project preparation was 3 months, the event was held in 6 to 8, March 2017 at the Tinguely Brunnen, Basel, Switzerland

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We used everyday objects and any kinds of art techniques that can represent the emotion of the visitors. The concept was based on the principle of interaction. It was a challenge how to make people to get involved in and interact with the public installation out of the mainstream, carnival. For this purpose, the team has set up a wooden framework in the form of an open box on the site, where people can stay and make something of confetti and collected wastes. There was no limit to the imagination and creativity for the realization.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: We have installed a wooden, hollow out, stud cube on the site. The size was 2m by 2m by 2m. There was one box which was filled with art supplies. At the beginning, the cube was empty but participants filled it with various artworks at the end.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The art practice can act as a source of inspiration and contributes to creating more value for the communities and recycling material stakeholders. Through the exhibition, public event and educational workshops, we can show people that materials are not only simple objects that we take for granted; Each material is a kind of reward to our labor and precarious resources. Therefore, if we make people think about everyday objects more preciously, we can encourage human behavior to sustainably reduce consumption.
CHALLENGE: Traditionally, the theme of the garbage actually has a validity on Basel Fasnacht. Some people didn't allow to collect confetti on the street during the carnival. Basel Fasnacht is a historical town event, there were a lot of administrative processes to get a project permissions that we had to deal with.
