| DESIGN NAME: Geta Inheritance Footwear PRIMARY FUNCTION: Footwear INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the collection comes from Japanese geta. Geta culture lasts for centuries even with the country’s development. Japanese leaves the geta culture as their believing of life. The collection is representing the keeping in the indigenous culture and a country’s believing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In the early years, the original geta was invented in China Tang Dynasty and then passed on to Japan in which has handed down so far. Even if in contemporary Japan, people still love to wearing geta in their daily life. The collection represents a country's belief in cultural heritage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The footwear as a geta wedge is a transformer design from traditional and classic Japanese geta to the fashion, modern and simple design which keeps the ancient culture elements like wood and simple pattern. The design is an improvement over the decades but still keeps its traditional culture. It reflects the soul of Japanese belief in cultural heritage. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project designed and finished within one month in Mar 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Wood Treatment, Veg-tan Leather Treatment, Leather Coating and Dyeing, Pigskin Lining, Fabric Pattern, Design and Digital Print, Industrial Design, Hollow Heel SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Footwear in US size 6 TAGS: footwear, hollow, wood, fashion, accessories, culture, heritage, digital print fabric RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research originated from the exploration and research on the cultural heritage of China and Japan. Clogs is one of the important inventions in ancient China. However, in contemporary China, few people wear clogs. On the contrary, after being transported to Japan in the Tang Dynasty, clogs were passed on even till the modern centuries and renamed as Geta in Japan. Therefore, I have studied the development background and inheritance history of Geta culture under the different cultures of China and Japan, and deeply explored the main reasons for the disappearance of Geta in China and the inheritance of Japan. In fact, I the disappearance and inheritance reason is connected with the orientation of the country and the mainstream appeal. In recent years, China's fashion design style gradually approaches to the countries as Europe and the United States. While, the development of Japan for fashion is designed by the inherent cultural elements along with fashion at the same time. Although these are just studies on the culture of clogs, they could also represent the pursuit and intention of development, politics, economy, culture, and fashion of a country. Fashion, it is not just clothes, accessories, shoes, bags and other simple items, it also represents a deeper level of different cultures, backgrounds and means a lot. CHALLENGE: The challenge point of this design is about making the wedge heel. I should not make it as heavy as a wood block, but fashionable and lightful for wearing. The other part is about the fabric usage. I designed the pattern and digitally printed it on the fabric. Moreover, it also important for me to solve the problem of how to make the wood arch fit for the bottom of the shoe last arch. NAME: Jingwen Zhang PROFILE: The designer believes that all designs should come from real life and is able to explore the small details that should stand ready to be the source of the inspirational elements of our design. With the recognization of her true calling in accessory design, the goal of bringing in special, eye-catch design for accessories as the discipline combines fashion, function, and creativity. Designer's project is focusing on the deep exploration of the soul's needs for the human being, which is also an important expression of the author's concern for people mental health in a positive way. |
