DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
ETAO

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sharpener

INSPIRATION:
The design has been inspired from an article which talked about the struggle of a left handed little girl to sharpen pencil with a conventional right handed sharpener. Products designed for simple day to day activities neglect the left handed population which is about 15 percent of the world's population. This lead to the design of Etao, a universal sharpener which can be made available at minimal cost. People do not have to think about left or right handed while buying since it works for both.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Etao is a universal sharpener-cum-eraser which can be used by both left & right handed users. The body has been designed as an eraser to house the metal core which has two blades placed symmetrically. The design of the blade allows the user to turn clockwise or anticlockwise supination to sharpen pencils. Its simple cylindrical form with grooves on the sides allows users including children to hold comfortably. Engraved English alphabets on the sharpener adds fun factor to the design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Insert pencil in the hole provided and turn clockwise(right handed) or counterclockwise (left handed) to sharpen pencil. The transparent cover helps in collecting the waste. Slide out the eraser from the cover by pushing it from one end to use the eraser or clean the sharpening chamber. The sharpener can still be used by holding at the grooves provided on the body surface for better grip.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
December 2017 - March 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Eraser Body - Synthetic Rubber - Injection Molding Metal Core - Iron - Casting/3D-Printing Packaging - Polycarbonate - Molding

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Over all Dimension L x W x H : 23 mm x 23 mm x 45mm. The transparent cylindrical packaging is 1mm thick. It also helps in collecting the waste. The assembly can be done easily as the eraser body can be stretched to make room for inserting the metal core and set it back to the original position.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Background: Study was done to analyse the problem faced by left handed users. Methods & Tools: Experiments were conducted to measure Pronation and Supination Ranges of Motion during sharpening. A right handed sharpener, a pencil and a marker were used. Results: It is found that the angle of rotation in supination is 130 Degree and that of Pronation is 75 Degree. Comparative study of the results with the normal ROM shows that the measured angles are exceeding the normal functional ROM.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part was to design the symmetrical twin blade. Due to the symmetry pointed tip design evolved but not good structurally. Therefore, a rib was added for strength and also it helps in housing the metal core in the eraser body.
