DESIGN NAME: WoodRibs
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Equestrian Sport Complex
INSPIRATION: Main source of inspiration for the design is unique location of the object in the waterfront of a large pond surrounded by pine forests. Surrounding landscape is formed by a combination of recreational spaces (Golf courses, sports grounds, walking paths), carefully preserved fragments of coniferous forest and freely scattered low-rise residential buildings, remote from each other. Complex is designed taking into account all technological requirements, retaining all existing trees on the site.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Multifunctional complex designed for year-round use, training & horse riding. Architectural & planning solutions are subject to completely different functions: a stable for twenty horses, an indoor arena with a field for classes and stands, cafes & open spaces, utility rooms & round arena. At the same time - all green spaces on a site are completely kept & not subject to cutting down. Architectural image is based on the application of modern "green" technologies friendly to man & nature.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Stable is connected to the covered arena through the 2-light space of entrance area (center of composition). Next-2-storey household block (1st floor: industrial, technical and sanitary facilities; 2nd floor: changing rooms, study, kitchen, outdoor balcony, and cafe with conference room). Main volumes of indoor manage - a field with a special coating for training and competitions. At the end of the building there is a playpen for activities on the cord, which can be used as a warm - up playpen.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2016-2017, Russia.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: High and elongated body of the main arena does not seem bulky, due to the large area of glazing of the outer walls. South side is covered with a "wave" of vertical wooden edges of sun protection. In combination with wooden frame structures, it seems that building dissolves in the natural environment. From side of open fields-spatial composition is built on contrast of low volume of stables and transparent arena with a soaring roof, connected by an intricate canopy-sculpture of main entrance.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total area - 3.5 ha Built-up area - 3850 sq. m; Floors - 1-2; Dimension of stables - 520 sq. m; Number of stables - 20 Size of each stable - 14 sq. m; Indoor arena - 2550 sq. m; Height of indoor manage - 13 m; Size of arena field - 1560 sq. m; Diameter of round manage - 18 m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The high wooden wave of the main element of the complex which is the huge indoor arena is similar to the Specter of a steep Galleon, reflecting on the surface of the bay, which deeply crashed into the wooded shores of a distant northern country. A bizarre play of light on the amber-honey ribs-frames echoes the glare of the surface of the reservoir, on the shore of which stretches equestrian complex.
CHALLENGE: Main goal is saving of unique surrounding landscape. Selection of materials, design and engineering solutions allowed the most organically enter a new large volume in the existing natural landscape. One of the obligatory stages of designing is a detailed topographic survey of the site with fixation of the location of all existing trees. Application sustainable technologies friendly to man and nature are using during the sustainable construction and the subsequent operation of the complex.
