DESIGN NAME: Sailaway
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall and desk lamp
INSPIRATION: This lamp was inspired by the experience of sailing and the desire for freedom, which invites us to go on an imaginary journey from our study. You can sail away from our duties and problems and explore unknown waters. Sailing gives you a unique experience about nature. There is a chance to experience total freedom and to deepen our knowledge about ourselves. This lamp symbolizes the discovery of the world and ourselves, the constant quest and the need for freedom.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sailaway can be used as decoration, table lamp, reading lamp or wall lamp. I wanted to imply the concept of sailing by using some characteristics of boats. For example, I used material which are used in boat building: canvas, walnut hull, hemp fibre. This way I could show my respect towards this ancient trade. The brightness of the light can be adjusted by two dimmer switches. You can easily remove the lamp from its base, which has two USB ports, and place it on the wall mount.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lamp has two kinds of lighting: one is focused light the other is diffused. Both settings can be adjusted by touch switches. The lamp can easily be removed from its base and placed on the wall mount. The base has two USB ports in it, which can be used to charge our mobile phones for example. By bending the upper part of the lamp you can direct the light where it needed. It can function as decoration, night lamp, wall lamp or desk lamp as well.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 in Hungary and finished in February 2018 in Hungary

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Everything in this lamp - from the rotating parts to the wings - are made of authentic and handmade parts. The body is made of ash wood and walnut. It was used natural oil and semi-shiny lacquer as finishing. The body of the sails is made of reusable polyethylene (PET) and it is covered with canvas sewed like real sails. The cord is hidden behind hemp fibre. The lamp is connected to the bases by copper-plated magnets, which transmit electricity.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: There are two USB ports in the base which can be used to charge electic devices. When using the lamp as a wall lamp, the cord can completely be hidden. The wall mount can hide two meters of cable. You can place the lamp on the wall in different positions. To avoid cable breaking the flow of electricity is supplied through magnets. Size: Width 120-250 mm x Depth 230 mm x Height 500 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I set out from a sail made by a parametric and paper folding technique. After an extensive experimenting process I finally developed an inversely rotating and gradually decreasing shape. After that I divided the surface to get the two sails. Looking at the sails everyone has their own associations. The lamp has a different look from every angle, which reflects on the diversity of sailing and discovery.
CHALLENGE: My aim was to create a lamp that evokes the experience of sailing but does not have the shape of a boat. I followed this basic concept when choosing the material and designing the details. This lamp invites us to sail away from our study, from our every day problems, situations and obligations to experience total freedom and discover new physical and spiritual spheres.
