DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Darvazeh Gilan

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
province Gate

INSPIRATION:
In the design of this building, the regional elements are observed. One of these elements is using sloped roofs as the main frame for the design, which is the general form of the traditional houses in the region; another element is pointing to the natural elements of the region. The Caspian Sea, forest, and winding roads are other symbols for this region, which are used in the design. The style of the curve used in the lower part and the blue color and the sea wave pattern alongside the single cypress tree used in design are indicators of Gilan region for anyone who enters these gates.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Gates of cities are somehow symbols of their identity! In an era with, more or less, homogeneous forms of cities, this has been the main inspiring idea for designing the project . This project, is the entrance gate of Gilan province in Iran, which is a historic region with its own identity. This designed gate is going to be constructed for the first time in such a region in Iran. The novel form of the gate involves a set of meaningful symbols which refer to the traditional features of the location.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The gate is designed in a way that the viewer faces various forms from each different angles. Those who approach the entrance, its curvy design and the way the tree is designed in it gives a sense of entering a green area. From another angle, you see a traditional house of the region being viewed in a winding road before arriving to the gate. Actually, when you move towards the gate, you see the changes of its form during various times. On the other hand, since the overall design is inspired by the architecture and nature of the region, there is a good interplay between the building and the nature around it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The building designed in January 2018 and the location of this project construction is in Astara/ Gilan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
first idea was traditional houses of the region became the criteria for the designing. First the design for the general regular geometric form was inspired by gable roofs. Then the inside volume of the house interior was removed and the elements of nature such as sea, forest and winding roads were placed inside. Also, the location of the tree, and the light shining on it, are all inspired by the culture of the region. The overall structure and surrounding volume is made of exposed concrete, and the curved part is made of concrete core, on which a pattern taken from sea waves is decorated using traditional tiles of the region.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 8000mm * Length 35500mm * Height 11500mm. Building area is 213 square meters

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Prior to begin the design, a complete research was carried out about the regional elements, which was based on the morphology of the traditional architecture of the region. Along with the research on traditional architecture, the cultural and natural indicators of the region were also studied. Traditional handicrafts, shapes and patterns used in them, main agricultural products, and even rituals and traditions of the region were studied. And finally a set of highly significant parameters was found as the main elements of the region.

CHALLENGE:
Since it is a public project financed by three different institutions, one of the problems and concerns of the architecture team was to address various tastes of the employers. The designer received various requests based on needs and tastes and it was very difficult to address them all. the employers specific requests was pushing the designer towards a totally indigenous and even classic design. Therefore, the most important challenge for the designers was how to create a modern building that at the same time includes traditional features.
