DESIGN NAME: Ohana
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tattoo Gallery Shop
INSPIRATION: The client is a professional tattoo artist with kids who will drop by to visit their daddy at work. As such, Ohana - which means family, is an integral idea towards this industrial favoured construct; the constant buzzing sound of the tattoo machine being relatable to the hard workings of a manufacturing factory. The dark, moody and mysterious perception of a tattoo shop is redefined into a bright, welcoming, and gratifying place to call a second home, one where not just clients, but family and friends could gather. The small space also motivates the creative usage of its furnishings.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The shop front's large see-through display provides a welcoming view. Artworks are openly suspended from the top like a gallery. Two pull-out tables provide flexibility to the space's usage and its underside serves as a poster-size showcase. The neon green projects a fun and bright creating environment. The chipboards and wooden texture create a sense of calmness. A sliding mirror cabinet creates the feeling of a larger open space and the rotating chipboard panels provide privacy when required.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The openness of the shop lures customers in. As they entered, they are inspired by the artwork that are hanging from the ceiling. Consultation with the artist can take place at the foldable tables. When more space is required say for visiting artists to collaborate, the tables can be folded up. In the work area, the bright colour sets a cheerful mood. Sliding cabinets tidily conceals equipment while a privacy room with rotating panels and a "Ink Progress" (In Progress) sign warns others off.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2017 and finished in December 2017 in the shop's location inside the Sungei Wang Plaza shopping mall in the busiest shopping district of Kuala Lumpur.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The entrance's large glass panel and chain-linked retractable door are intended to appear less intimidating to outsiders. Instead of hanging artworks on walls or kept in booklets, they are hung on a clothesline like how films are developed in a darkroom to stimulate the excitement of seeing an artwork for the first time. Folding tables provide flexibility to the space's usage, rotating panels for privacy, sliding mirror doubles up as storage, and bright colours for a fun creating environment.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total size of the shop is about 40 square metres, located inside one of the oldest and famous shopping malls, called Sungei Wang Plaza, in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Consultation with the client led to one of the goals is being different than other tattoo shops. The artworks are to be the highlight of the shop like an art gallery; that tattoo shops are not necessarily dark and full of black but can be fun and bright. Research was done on the materials to be used for the shop which is for the raw industrial type as well as furnitures which are suitable. By basing off the compact living concept, the furnishings have to be flexible and serves a dual purpose.
CHALLENGE: With a total area of 425 square feet or 40 square metres, the challenge was to turn the space into a fully functional working shop, maximizing every corner yet provide a feeling of spaciousness and being a fun place to work in.
