DESIGN NAME:
Chu Jie

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Cast Iron Teapot

INSPIRATION:
The design was inspired by the traditional costumes of ancient Chu culture. Chu is a country in ancient China and it is one of the origins of Han civilization. Traditional costumes are usually the precipitation of a nation’s civilization, reflecting the unique life-style, aesthetics, and philosophy of the ancient Chu people in a concrete form. We extracted the most representative Chu elements from the existing clothing documents of Chu culture and applied them to the design of CHUJIE. Through this way, we hope more people can feel the splendor of Chu culture.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Chu·Jie is a cast iron teapot, its creation inspired by the ancient Chu State buildings and utensils. On this basis, we also introduce the elements of modern aesthetics into it. The curvilinear textured pot body and the flat mirror-shaped pot cover form a kind of aesthetic feeling of both tradition and modernity. We hope to achieve a balance between traditional design elements and modern design elements through this design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Teapot can be placed on coffee table at home or office , people can use a teapot soak a pot of tea and enjoy their own leisure time.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2017 in Beijing and finished in December 2017 in Wuhan

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pot body of the teapot is made of rough cast iron material, the lid is a smooth metal, and the other parts used to do the old brass.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The maximum diameter of pot:13.5cm,length of product:20.5cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We collected a large amount of information about the culture of Chu from the Internet and literature, especially the information of traditional costumes of Chu. The members in our team categorized and analyzed the images and texts, and analyzed the colors, materials, size ratios, patterns and other elements of different categories of traditional costumes. In the end, we extracted the elements that can reflect the characteristics of most of Chu's clothing. We apply these elements to the design. The combination of black and copper is a very common color combination in the Chu culture. The shape of the kettle body is taken from the sleeve shape in the Chu country costume. The cast iron and the old brass material are often seen in the oriental classical design.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge of this design is how we should show the Chu culture through this teapot.
