DESIGN NAME: Shaman Necklace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Necklace, Bracelet
INSPIRATION: Inspiration: The project begun with an exploration of form within the boundary of necklaces and jewelry design. Hence it was inspired by a repetitive wave movement and motion. The design was inspired by the variance in the dimension and size of each module when they are stacked side by side. This creates a wave structure and movement in the whole design typology.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: the design focuses on turning by-product of plastic into usable product. It is an inevitable process that laser cutting machines will always incur amount of plastic waste during the layering and watering process. Hence, the aim of using this material was to turn these plastic by-product into a fashionable piece of design where one is proud to wear and becomes part of the everyday wear.
In addition, this design aims to create a beautiful piece even when the wearer is not wearing it. The shaman necklace behaves like a natural piece blending into nature, behaving like a butterfly in a garden.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The clear bracelet allows a different interaction, where the user is able to flip up or down in order to suit different style of clothings. This upwards and downwards motion creates a new way of wearing a bracelet, as the form and the design changes as one moves about.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project is completed in Singapore, NUS National University of Singapore, industrial design, on 15 December 2016. The aim of this project was to create a fresh appeal in the jewellery sectors.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The construction technique made use laser machinery cutting and the traditions of hand made jewelry, to create a contemporary piece. Each module is cut from the by-product of plastic sheets waste, and they are assembled to prepare for hand sanding and polishing. The treatment of color was explored in an earth tone and monochromatic tone. As for the earth tone, it mixes 3 tones: Sand, Brown and maroon. This gives a color gradient to achieve a subtle and warm tribal color. This was contrasted with the clear base color of the acrylic, transparent. The colours highlighted the gentle curves of each module and form a coloured wave design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project was used as a platform to study and understand the culture and attitude towards creative projects like jewelry design , arts and craft. This was done in several design events in the Red Dot Design museum. Hence it was found out that the appreciation towards craft and design in Singapore seems to be tailored and suit to minorities that pursue arts. Hence, the question is to challenge the usual way of designing a piece of jewellery. Must it be made out of precious material? How can we appeal to the new group, the millennials? How can we turn everyday material into something precious and personal to a wearer?
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to strike a balance between function and form. The difficulty was to explore how can the design looks interesting however, not overly designed or decorated like an extravagant piece. However, the methodology behind it was to investigate the relationship between a wearer and a piece of jewelry. Often, a jewelry piece was seen as something that accentuate the style of the clothes, and wearers view it as something that they only need it when they are heading out. However, this design aims to create a beautiful piece even when the wearer is not wearing it. The shaman necklace behaves like a natural piece blending into the nature, behaving like a butterfly.
