DESIGN NAME: Adorable Cube
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Jewel
INSPIRATION: Cube is the very first volume introduced to the learner when 3d sketching is taught in a design institute. I have always been fascinated by cube since the days of my design college. It is the most basic volume and almost every 3D volume can be derived from this amazing design. It is this versatility of cube which inspired me to design this 2 in 1 jewel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design is made by a single wire having square cross section which moves in 3D space and creates the cube structure. The wire has a continuous form which makes cube geometry in a unique design. To add to the versatility of this form, the wire has a mix of 3 different gold colors. The outer sides of the wires have unique texture on each side of the cube design. The combination of gold colors and the uniqueness of textures give a distinct look to each side of the cube. These combinations can be used to match different looks and dresses.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This distinctive geometry offers a unique look with the ease of usage for wearer. With the offerings of different looks within the same volume, It is quite an engaging design. It can be made into variety of precious metals (both gold and silver) and can be customized using diamonds and different color stones. Similarly it can be produced in inexpensive materials such as; titanium and iron with the combination of inexpensive artificial stones, making it available for a large consumer reaches. It is prefect for the audience who like to mix and match their looks and always looking for experimental fashion.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 in Mumbai, India and prototyping is finished in February 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The first prototype was made by copper wire to understand the form which looks simple but is complicated to make. Then it has been designed and developed at the computer keeping following production techniques in mind: lost wax micro casting of different part, manually cleaning by file and bulino(very fine, metal cutting knife), diamond setting, polishing and assembling the casting pieces together by soldering technique. Final touch of finishing is given by very fine filing and then polishing. Last part of finishing is rhodium polish.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research started with a simple thought of working on cube and to make it interesting somehow by working on geometry, texture, appearance and usability. After searching on internet and sketching ideas for almost 1 month, I arrived and selected this particular concept. For technical part of learning and understanding, few rough models in metal wire were tried and then prototype was made using 3D software on computer.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge is to understand the geometry. The fold of the square wire with proper angles and right gaps which creates this unique cube takes a few trial and errors to understand. The different parts will be marked in cad for ease of assembly. A base of wood model is required on which these parts can be placed to form the final shape and then soldered together to assemble. This not only makes the jewels with the right shape and proportions but also makes the job smooth for production.
