| DESIGN NAME: Colour & Line PRIMARY FUNCTION: Knock Down Chair INSPIRATION: Inspiration was found in the challenge to use simple elements to create a comfortable iconic chair that allows for variation. Through its minimal assembly method, with the seating element and backrest slot into the armrests and are held in place with wedges that remain visible as subtle details an infinite range of possibilities is possible by changing the colours and finishes of the elements. With this possibility of variation, the chair can fit any interior environment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The chair’s basic concept is to create comfortable seat with simple flat surfaces. This is achieved through a precisely designed inclination of the seating and backrest that guarantees a proper body support. Constructed with a minimum amount of elements the chair offers a puzzle-like playfulness and geometric beauty through its lines and flat surfaces. The characteristic of showing the joints and the connections of the elements in a minimal and honest fashion forms the base of its aesthetic. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The seating element and backrest simply slot into the armrests and are held in place with wedges that remain visible as subtle details. This allows the chair to be stored and transported flat. Change the colors of the parts and an infinite number of combinations can be created. With this possibility of variation, the chair can fit any interior environment be it a living dining, lounge or restaurant. In similar style as the dining chair, a lounge chair and matching table can be produced. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Consistently made out of 18 mm durable birch plywood, only the chair’s surfaces are stain coloured, leaving the wood grain exposed. The lines of the plywood layers are left blank while the whole chair is poly-urethane lacquered for durability. The elements were laser cut to precision. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: W480 mm x D500 mm x H1000 mm / SH420 mm TAGS: colour, line, chair, comfort, variation, knock down, iconic RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This chair was initially designed without the knock-down feature. In the first prototype all elements are fixed. The simplicity of chair generated the idea to develop a knock-down version so that the chair could be stored taking up minimal space. The final solution to use wedges to hold all elements seems now the most natural solution, but it took several studies to get there. CHALLENGE: The chair was fabricated in the Netherlands while for a show in London. Therefore communicating the design intent with the Dutch furniture craftsman over a long distance was a challenge.
