DESIGN NAME: Lace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hand Knotted Rug
INSPIRATION: Lace is inspired by lights casting shadows on the face, evoking a sense of drama to the features of a woman. Using monochromatic tones of grays and whites, body art is applied to enhance or to camouflage the feature of the woman. Using innovated new techniques of twisted silk yarns with long threads and flat looped knots, a modern abstract pattern is created. Textures are introduced to add a third dimension to the face by long silk yarns overlapping each other as the monochromatic tones of blacks, whites and grays stand next to each other revealing and concealing the design. The yarns are flattened or raised, forming shades and shadows and giving depth of wisdom across of the map of the face.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Using innovated new techniques of twisted silk yarns with long threads and flat looped knots, a modern abstract pattern is created when viewed closely.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Being aware of the earth and our own responsibility to its environment we carefully work to use the finest natural fibers of silk. Silk is 100% sustainable and a renewable natural resource that is recycled into the yarns.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The rug was designed in March 2016 and completed in August 2016. Location: Dubai, UAE

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The technique of double dipping the hand-spun yarn enhances the color variations on the yarn before weaving. Dip-dyed yarns give gradations in color that can range from subtle colorways to a stronger boldness as it intensifies.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The design is woven in Tibetan knot to a high quality of 110 knots only using the highest quality of 100% Handspun silks. The size is 2500 mm by 3000 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Having over twenty years as an interior designer, the designer learned that a rug had a strong effect on all interiors. She set up her own company with a different design philosophy which was missing from the market. Her instinct was to create designs that were artistic and which were created from her own experience rather than just patterns. She went out of her way to look for artisans who could understand and bring her vision to realization.
CHALLENGE: One of the challenges with this project was to work with skilled artisans who brought them generations of techniques but whose vision of design was rooted in their older traditions. The designer had to work with these artisans for them to understand her vision and to challenge their own ideas. It was very rewarding to see their satisfaction and pride on something they had never made before and had now become part of them.
