DESIGN NAME:
Timeless Roots

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Exhibition Museum

INSPIRATION:
In reaching out for the spirit beyond look and feel, therein lies the design challenge to create spaces integrated with objects that penetrate the inner recesses of the mind of the viewer where images may float inside him. Even when they pass lightly through his mind, the smallest idea from quiet contemplation from the nature of design will suffice as fulfilling food for thought.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The present inspired from the past in context of the future sowed the seeds of fruits that bloomed into 3 unique exhibitions being among the first of their kind in Asia at that time, 1989 to 1995. The design concepts evolved around storyboards seeking to arouse interest from not only collectors and connoisseurs of relics and antiques but a younger generation keen to explore the impact of ancient civilisations on their world in a way they can relate to.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The result was a passionate collaboration among the visionaries that started the projects, the project managers, the curators and the designers to create Light and Sound Museum without compromising the value of the antiquity and heritage that came with the artefacts on precious loan from China. The design processes and components were akin to keystones that hold together a harmonious whole being greater than the sum total of its parts that touched the human spirit.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
There were 3 projects spread over 6 years, The Warring States, The Han Dynasty and the Tang Dynasty. It started in 1989 and finished in 1995 at The Empress Place in Singapore.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
From each pavilion of exhibits that represent a specific sub theme, emerges a magical prism of that space engaging the viewer in an experience of a particular moment of time. With the design and conceptual intent to arouse emotions while freezing those feelings between person and object within each pocket of time, each pavilion became part of a vision of time that expanded to new frontiers from a futuristic context of mind over sight and spirit over matter. As visitors passed through each tunnel of a pavilion, time becomes frozen as from a narrow door, the viewer can witness the past in context of the present inspired by the future.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The prestigious exhibitions were held in The Empress Place, a Heritage Building. In arriving at the ultimate in spatial experience, not just creative design materials and finishes were sought but AV equipment to support even music composers engaged for the 3 ongoing projects.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The Principal of ETHOSpace, David I Tay was engaged in a passionate pursuit predicated on a love and passion he regarded his calling. Leading the entire team of specialty designers, curators and music composers, together, they were inspired to put together a pioneer-inspired piece of work that came with the 3 themes prevailing over almost 7 years to create a space in our minds within those precious spaces of time of ancient history.

CHALLENGE:
In essence, the Dynasties seek also to reach out to a new generation expressive of an inchoate, impossible promise.
