Social Impact

INSPIRATION:
The open area serves as a platform accommodating various possibilities.Without events or activities take place within an open plaza, the existence of such space serves merely one purpose: it serves as a conduit for people to pass by.If so, does this mean that an open plaza or an open public area without more lacks the quintessential features to attract people to its center and to enable one who stands inside such area marks and defines one’s physical location in relation to the spaceitself?

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Rather it is aiming to enable the participants to experience the open space while they are interacting with the design. The extension and continuity of the space are made possible by the reflective surface of the design; the position of the design creates an enclosed area triggering the participants’ innate ability to interact with their surroundings. Participants can experience a variety of relationship as they are connecting and communicating with the design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Public spaces have an exquisite quality: the open area serves as a platform accommodating various possibilities. Without events or activities take place within an open plaza, the existence of such space serves merely one purpose: it serves as a conduit for people to pass by. If so, does this mean that an open plaza or an open public area without more lacks the quintessential features to attract people to its center (“centrality”) and to enable one who stands inside such area marks and defines one’s physical location in relation to the space itself? In the vast horizon, anything in our surrounding can affect our physical posture and our sensory experience. Our body will be redefined by the existence of a “symbol” that is placed within the open area. These symbols can be tangible; they can be a tree or a bench placed nearby. These symbols can also be abstract, such as our very own perceptions, memories and imaginations. The “location” thus becomes an individual’s choice of such symbol. And through the choice of this symbol in an open public space, one can feel the existence of one’s body, hence redefining one’s surroundings.
