| DESIGN NAME: The New Studio PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office Space INSPIRATION: The initial concept is inspired by the development of photograph. Like the generic principal of photography, the darkness provides great opportunity to shape the space by light and the light continue reshape itself during the day. We would like to create a work place that absorbs and abstracts ingredient of nature continuously. It generates dialogues between natural and artificial environment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The NEW studio is the work place for fashion photographer and converted from original factory-like division with limited external access at the front. The north elevation was the only opening for the entire site. Thus, the highly reflected concrete wall is designed as a lightwell. It is divided into three parts according to the light level: public space, working, and private area. Darkness, Material and the light capture the beauty of the origin, the original curvature and the nature itself. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Convert the standard Arch-Roof factory space into sensible photography studio with light that captured the outline of periphery. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project starts in the beginning of June, 2016 and ends at April of 2017. The opening for the office is April 4th in 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: - SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Total floor area: 214.20 sqm TAGS: A film-like office, Gradient Light, Curved Ceiling, Pandora Box, Lightwell RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Light plays an important role in photography. Photographers are always looking for the light, following the light, and using backlight to create their works. Light into architecture is similar. It has never behaves the same at diverse place, and it still performance differently during the day. The requirement of light is rigorous in a photography studio. Light could be beautiful, glowing, sharp or soft. It has ability to change the mood and style of a scene. Forming lights of events from an old factory, and programming it according to the light levels to receive the gorgeous result. CHALLENGE: Creating and manipulating phenomena of lights within constrain of space is difficult, especially when there is no extra opening allowed. Thus direct light, reflected light, and diffused light are all used in this project. The opening of the roof illustrates the upper floor. The highly reflected concrete wall at the front yard built a lightwell to brighten the indoor. Nevertheless, the high-ceiling multi-purposed space next to the front yard has let diffused light deeper into the working zone. NAME: Laboratory for Diverse Status PROFILE: Laboratory for Diverse Status(LDS) is a global interdisciplinary design studio, focuses on the design and research of architecture, urbanism, industry and media. We recognize that architecture is fundamentally an urban artifact that coexists with the environment and infrastructure and situates itself respectfully in the culture of its place.
