DESIGN NAME: Biograll
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Greenwall
INSPIRATION: Indoor planting is getting popular and it has to become more in touch with the human. Biograll is designed to fill the empty space of well-designed home vertical gardening systems in the market. The products on the market are not designed to be a decorative element in interior design of the environment, they are not smart and interactive enough. Biograll is designed with a bionic design approach to create a harmony between its function as a vertical garden and a decorative element in the house. With the use of computer simulations and modeling (Rhino – Grasshopper), it is possible to customize this green wall for any place it is about to be used.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Biograll is a smart environment sensitive green wall, which reacts to environment and plants condition changes. Biograll is a bionic and sustainable green wall. As the Sun’s position changes through daytime Biograll bends to receive maximum sunlight like a sunflower it follows the sun. By following the sun and capturing the maximum amount of sunlight energy in addition to giving the plants maximum light; its surface that is covered with photovoltaic panels will receive enough energy to produce the power that Biograll needs. Biograll’s form is inspired by nature and made of Voronoi, some of the spaces between its cells used as the pots for the plant's growth and some water bags filled with water, which will be used for plants hydration and reflecting the LED lights surrounding them.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Biograll is designed to make human and nature closer together, by its movements and interactions, which make it seem alive. Biograll has a semi-robotic structure, which helps it to change its shape like it wilts if the roots of plants do not contain enough water and follow the sunlight to harvest maximum energy. By caressing and touching the Biograll it will dispense enough amount of water for each plant according to the plant kind and its humidity condition. Its LED lighting system changes its brightness according to the time and sun position. LED lights color get red if plants health is at risk. So Biograll gives its user a lot of information by its behavior and they are not only shown in a smartphone app.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2017 in Isfahan and finished in June 2017, and was exhibited at the Art University of Isfahan in July 2017.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Due to Biograll is designed with the use of algorithms, it is possible to generate an unlimited combination of parameters to make different shapes and dimensions of Biograll, but the main dimensions are 4850 mm x 85 mm x 2300 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Urban life is still growing and people need more plants for making oxygen and also for indoor planting and growing vegetables and other plants for personal use. Interior and Spatial Design are now adopting more plants and it is much sustainable. And as the generative and algorithmic design is trending, creating a mixture of this two is unavoidable. Biograll is the mixture of words: bionic and green wall.
CHALLENGE: Scripting the right algorithms to generate the closest forms to main idea and sketches was the most time consuming and the hardest part. I made eighteen different algorithms clusters to reach the fully functional one. But the good part is with using this algorithm it is possible to generate unlimited forms within seconds.
