DESIGN NAME: Kids Playground
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The couple who owns the house raises two children and they live in Taipei for long period of time. Owing to concerning the better educational condition for children, they decided to move to Xinzhu district in which it is not far from Taipei city. In addition, they wish their new living environment could have a better living quality and be more leisure than the place where they used to live in.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design focuses on openness and flexibility for the family with two growing kids. By partitioning with glazing, an extension of the living room, study room, and guest room are then formed. Along the widened corridor, the sliding panels serves the function of exhibiting photos, sketches, and notes. They also could become the movable partitions for kitchen and dining area. The kids’ rooms are considerately designed with four sliding doors letting kids play together or sleep separately. It also creates various views and spatial configurations.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1.The corridor at the center is enlarged to insert displaying screens. They serve the function of demonstrating kids’ art works and letting them to game around which meet the needs of preschool kids who like to paint and run everywhere.
2.The study room is designed as an area where each member of the family can read. Moreover, with the changeable bolts and shelves on the bookcases, clients can shift the arrangement arbitrarily in order to flex what they want to exhibit or store.
3.As for the layout of two symmetrical kids’ rooms, a sliding door is placed between two rooms. While the door is fully opened, the whole family can sleep together and children can play in the wider pace. While the door is closed, it becomes two private bedrooms again.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 1.On the displaying walkway, black iron is used for both track light and the screens. Also, the color wooden boards laying on the floor embellish the delightful and childlike atmosphere. The panels installed on the screens are composed of paint glass and iron plate which offer the function of doodling and exhibiting.
2.In the study room, a storage panel is hanging on the wall. The panel is constructed from iron frame and it is perforated by laser cutting combing with removable stainless-steel rods. It operates as a useful panel that can be altered in accordance with the future storage needs.
3.The track of the overhung sliding doors between two kids’ rooms conceals within the gaps in-between the wooden partition. When the door is opened, the free-track design helps two rooms become a unity and widens the space as well.
<2>The study room is designed for whole family. And the wooden bolts and laminates are used on the showcase, so the showcase can be changed the way arbitrarily and it also has function of storage and display.
<3> Between two children’s bedrooms is a sliding door. When the door is opened, the whole family can sleep here together and young children can also play in this wide space. When the door is closed, it becomes two private bedrooms.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The total area of the property is 154 square metres.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Due to the parents’ concern for the kids. The project is blended with various thoughtful designs including the widened corridor, movable displaying screens, arbitrarily adjustable panel in the study room, and the kids’ rooms which can elastically use according to the age of children. With these Kids-based designs, they help the home become a more intriguing and livable shelter.
CHALLENGE: Life and kids’ education are first priority for clients. The design of space, thus, must stick to flexibility and multi-function.
