| DESIGN NAME: SR1928 The Awakening Concert Grand Piano PRIMARY FUNCTION: Concert Grand Piano INSPIRATION: The inspiration both in design and the development is a supercar in the context that the typical piano is just a car, so this is a Superpiano. All this time piano develop is more into a traditional approach that mostly not change in term the cabinet design for more than 100 years, where SR 1928 in more like the first supercar, the piano system, while using the today's state of the art system, the sound flow channeling is different than traditional piano, think of it just like a bookshelf speaker internal design. It has a luxury feel as also new technology as part of the interaction with the object. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: SR 1928 The Awakening is trying to redefine a new thinking on how musical instruments such as grand piano should be representing our modern life. It focused on the player feel as the piano has wrapped the player to create a more intimate feeling, and the sound is directed towards the pianist. The cover is open in a new way instead of a traditional hinge. It also has performance mode where the wrap can be opened to show the pianist fingers. It has automation playing system, midi, and tablet computer 'stand'. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Internal sound enhancement through sound reflector inside the piano (and later outside the piano - under development). Personal feel for the pianist and sound redirect towards the player. Digital recording system and tablet computer interaction. Automated play system and MIDI integration. Private play and performance play mode (side wing attached/detached) PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started in April 2017 in Jakarta, first 1:1 prototype body presented July 2017. Currently under development with target completion October 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Main material is plywood with Indonesian wood veneer. The system is from major international supplier to match a world-class quality. The hinge is uniquely designed made from aluminium. Some additional 3rd party system for tablet computer attachment. Automated play and recording system and Midi out implementation. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 95 cm /Width 220 cm/ Lenght 380 cm Category Concert Grand Piano System 275 cm TAGS: piano, musical instruments, indonesia, raul renanda RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We create the 1:1 prototype using our own custom 186 cm Grand Piano using metal wrap around it, to review the effect of this new 'body' and how it correlates with the sound it produces. What we try to achieve is not only 'the look' of the piano, but the subtle effect on the player feels, and the way sound delivers to the piano player. It has an opening at the keyboard from the piano hammer so that the player can feel the 'percussive CHALLENGE: The primary challenge is to create a design that has to deliver its contemporary design and yet still respect the classic style and also push the luxury looks since this Concert Grand Piano produce in such high-quality materials and expensive piano actions. It is all handmade so the consistency is the key, and also how this piano shipped and assemble also considered. Construction of the piano cabinet is not an issue because it still respects the traditional wood making craftsmanship, but the focus will be the effect of this new piano body design to the sound it produces.
