DESIGN NAME: Nelio
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular shelf
INSPIRATION: In the world of owning too many objects one needs clarity and harmony. I wanted to create a solution that makes one think what objects are worth keeping - especially in sight. I created an element that is like a frame around the most precious objects one has, giving them the value they deserve, framing their beauty. I created the element modular, so one can build up a personal composition out of them according to the size of ones wall or the amount of precious objects one has.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Your wall, your rules! Nelio modular shelving units create a piece of art on your wall. Compose your set for your like and need. Assembling is easy and the result is a unique chain of units. Materials are matt lacquered oak and painted mdf. Nelio shelves are available in various colours and made by Puulon in Finland.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: While assembling one can turn a unit 90/180/270 degrees. The form of the oak frame gives one the possibility of composing endless chains. The assembling process is easy.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: First prototypes were made in Autumn 2014. First factory made models were launched in Spring 2017.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I studied the modularity by making several models out of cheaper materials. The final form was decided after several alternatives. Another thing, that was studied carefully, was the assembly detail. I did research in ways of assembling things on the wall.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was in finding a way to achieve modularity without too much engineering. I wanted the modularity play amore poetic role in the final result.
